It's not irony, and I already know this. Despite that, the fact is FF uses it's own conventions. That's why we have Black Mage instead of Sorcerer, White Mage instead of Cleric, and Red Mage instead of Bard (D&D 1st edition Bard was a multi-class like Red Mage and not yet made into a song-mage like later editions did).
