Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if Elidibus expected it (Until recently with Zenos, nothing seemed to surprise them) but letting Urianger do Urianger things would have been the backup to "Just let the WoD kill the WoL to hurry the Calamity." main goal.

The problem was that Ardbert and his party was too good at their jobs, which is why they had to rush when the flood was beginning. They were on a very short time limit before the First would become a Void and the source was nowhere near ready for a rejoining. After all, the plan was to eliminate Ardbert and his party to stall on the precipice of a Flood so that the Source can be setup to be rejoining and then they would trigger it.

Hm makes sense but then the Ascians should really get more careful with their attempts because if one party of WoLs can nearly turn another shard useless then maybe they should do this another way. Also they got lucky again with the timing because if the meeting with the WoDs and sending Minfilia back was just delayed for a couple of days the flood would have destroyed everything..
