There was a perfectly valid reason for "larboard" and he talked about it at one of the Fanfests. It was an awkward thing to translate, since the original Japanese uses the equivalents of 'port' and 'starboard', but are literally more like 'leftboard' and 'rightboard' - so easy for a player to instantly understand which way they needed to go. This was great times for my FC and I, as with some mechanics I can be slow to pick things up. After a vote abandon, the conversation went something like this:

Me: Guys, help me understand the 180 telegraphs. I can't tell where they are coming from.
FC member 1: Starboard = right; Larboard = left
Me: Lol. what?
FC member 2: Starboard means it comes from the right, and Larboard means it comes from the left. You need to pay attention to the cast bar, and also try to stay in the middle of him so you have time to get out of the way.
Me: Ugh! Why can't they just name it 'right cannon' 'left cannon'?
FC member 1: lol
Me: Ok so if he uses Starboard, it means I dodge to the left?
FC member 2: Maybe. It depends on which way he's facing. It's his right, and his left.
FC member 1: yup, he also flips around every time he uses it and puts a vuln stack on you if you get hit. It's also random so he doesn't always alternate the cannons.
Me: OMFG!
FC member 1: rdy to try again?
Me: ….
FC member 1: it's ok Gem. I switched to my healer to help you out
*CHING!! tick...tick...tick...tick*
