did u play Final Fantasy Tactics? Ultima surely isn't always the "strongest" magic spell around... in Tactics it wasn't even stronger than Blms top tier fire/ice skills...

...and if they add Ultima as spell-of-spells anytime soon... what should they introduce with the next expansion or level cap? skills which aren't worth to use cause ultima is ultima and nothing has to be more handy and stronger at any time than well yeah... Ultima?... hmm

Besides the lore, the other problem with Ultima is the name. If we get it, I'd prefer it be in the final expansion, and a long way off from now. It would just bug me if I got it at level 80 and then learn some other big spell at 90 and 100.

to add to what others have said, it's alluded to that the Ultima used by Ultima Weapon and the final boss of the SB 24 man raid have a connection. also worth noting that in every FF game Ultima appeared in as a player spell it has always been less cost efficient/less powerful than most other tools you would have at that point. going all the way back to FF2.

This is a mechanical restriction of the game's damage cap.

By this logic almost all summoning and magic becomes obsolete by the time your Fighters get Genji gloves and Excalibur and Ragnarok.

And because Tactics is mentioned specifically, Lightning stab.

Ultima as new level 80 ability for maintaining Enochian for 60s.

Ultima is generally considered the strongest Black Magic in the FF universe. Yes, there are outliers. But in most games it is the single strongest magic spell available.

Really depends what game we look at, some have Ultima has a usable spell while some others we only see it used by certain enemies, but it wasn't necessarily a BLM exclusive spell. Lore reason though it probably wouldn't work being a BLM action as mentioned in a few posts above,

My fantasy for BLM is that Ultima is a Level 80 channeled direct damage ability, growing in strength every second and rising to a monstrous climax while simultaneously giving a Haste buff to the raid that keeps increasing in percentage every second. YES!!!!! :D


But it wouldn't really fix the BLM issue :(

Even WITH Ultima as our Level 80 nuke, we still would be undesirable for a 8-man party. More DPS won't help, unless there is an enormous increase in personal DPS for Black Mage to the point where the meta changes. I feel that there are 3 possible solutions:

1) Increase party sizes
2) Nerf raid utility for other classes
3) Give a unique utility ability to BLM so that it has its own "Trick Attack"-level usefulness.

Option 3 is the easiest one to balance by far.

BLM will probably get "Demi Ultima" at level 90 or 100. It's the most powerful spell in the FF lore, and in XIV it's the equivalent to a tactical nuke, so we won't ever get the full thing.

Ultima was the strongest spell in Tactics, just that the version ramza got was Ultima 1. In Japanese it was Ultima, Ultimara, and Ultimaga. The last 2 were used by the last 2 bosses and were called Divine/Absolute Ultima respectively in FFT WoL.
