The new fights have some unclear mechanics (maybe spoilers?)

as the big thread on the whole larboard/starboard has pointed out: starboard and port are very distinctive and easy to tell apart, while *arboard and **arboard are easy to mix up, especially when you have to focus on other stuff as well. Which is exactly the reason it was dropped ~200 years ago.

It would really be better if they had used the more distinctive terms "port" and "starboard". If you do the fight you don't read the terms and then react to what you read, the reaction time would be way to high to react to the mechanic. You have to train your brain to react automatically to the terms (usually described as "muscle memory"). Doing that on a term that only differs by a single letter makes it really more hard then it should be.

For Star/Larboard I wish they'd call it Starboard and Port, both because Larboard is an antiquated term and it's easier to tell the two words apart at a glance with all the flashy lights and backgrounds involved in FF XIV combat.

Part of this problem is that i(and im sure many others) dont run TofF often. I know the attack, but i always doubt that i remember it right. Is he calling the direction he's attacking(so port/star means get in front/behind) or is he calling the safe spots(meaning port/star wants you to get to either side)? Im 75% sure he's calling the direction of the attack, but i always doubt myself until the first attack goes out each time i randomly wind up there. Not that this applies to me with Omega. That one im positive he's calling out the attack.

Not sure if this is relevant, but I've noticed Star/Larboard is used on Airship parts, maybe submersibles too.

Is this a retcon, or has it always been that way?

I thought it was strange that they'd use an antiquated word like larboard, but now it seems like there is precedent for it, just nobody noticed/cared?

So how exactly do the aoes work where you get a marker with three arrows pointing in different directions? Does this mean party members where the arrows are pointing will take more damage so you want to point them away from the party? Or does it just mean you're about to get hit with a big aoe in general?

For example I think exceath's flare had this, and you get it sometimes in O12. My instinct with these is to run to the edge of the boss arena, pointing one arrow off the edge and trying to position where the party is between the other two arrows, but I was never sure if that was the 'correct' way to handle it or not.

Those are proximity aoes. They deal damage to everyone based on how close they are to the point of impact (in thi case, you), so you generally want to go as far away from your party as possible. The specific directions of the arrows is irrelevant, it's just meant to be a bunch of arrows pointing outward as opposed to the inward-pointing arrows on damage-split aoes.

That marker originally showed up in A11, and it was called the GTA-100 (which targeted the OT unless the OT was dead). The way I remember that is actually from a NEST video where Jesse called it the “GeT-Away-100”. So basically, when you see it, get away from everyone else.

The way you’re describing it is correct: the two tanks are always the ones targeted by that in V12N, and they should each stand on the opposite ends of the arena, with the party as close to being between them as possible (so, the middle of the arena after the Suppression AOE disappears). If the Sagittarius Arrow AOE that Omega-M does isn’t going through the middle, you can actually run into the very center of the arena after the large Suppression AOE that cuts through it goes off; I’m fairly certain that you can try to bait that AOE off to the side, but I may be wrong. This makes it much easier on healers to heal the party up after the two Optimized Meteors drop because people aren’t so spread out.

Of course, if Sagittarius Arrow is cutting through the center, you have to improvise a little bit: go to the edge of the arena as close to exactly between the two tanks as you can, and then run back to the middle as Sagittarius Arrow goes off so the healers’ AOE healing can hit you.

Ah okay. Guess I was over thinking it because I'd seen other 'proximity aoe markiers' used so when I got to it in this expansion I assumed it was a different mechanic.

Good news is I've been doing it right even if I was overthinking it by considering where the arrows are pointed, thanks. I guess if I was doing it wrong someone would have yelled at me for it by now.

Lifehack: If your tank is facing north, follow directions as normal (Larboard=L=Left). As soon as you dodge the first one, turn your camera so that you're facing south (because he always spins). From there, dodge again using the same reference. This is the easy way. Or you can remember to dodge normally first, then since he always spins--if he does the opposite named move stay still. If he does the same move 2x, dodge the first normally, then dodge the other way the second.

Example"

1st Larboard (dodge right) + 2nd Larboard (dodge left)

1st Larboard (dodge right) + 2nd Starboard (stay right)
