Make sure you do the story missions, I for one quite liked them.

Also find a grand company you like and start doing the missions for that as well.

im on a main mission to goto uldah @ 18

I dont know the population on Palamecia but you ll have to solo until 30 and hopefully found a pt at that lvl, else conrinues solo until 50.

Hope the server merger can bring back some life for the low lvl pt

It's not necessary, but it will help you very much. Things like Second Wind of PGL, Cure of Conjurer, Sentinel of Gladiator, the list is pretty long...

Check the last chapter 'Seeking a party'.

I'm not sure how populated your server is, but in Lindblum putting up your flag helped me forward a lot to get everything to 50 :)

There's also servers with more "Day 1" players that tend not to use the party system. Which is a shame because it's quite useful.
A lot of the advice here is sound. Also keep in mind you can buy low level gear form NPCs should the markets be lacing. Just check the Adventurers guild.

Better find few friends before level 25. Otherwise getting chocobo can be painful. And chocobo is very useful if fishing/gathering.
