I mean, we've had characters who've fit the blue mage archetype in the series who've used staves, whips, giant forks, and spears, not to mention the traditional swords for the games with job selection. You have the potential to go with a lot of things, or even something totally new and different.

What about like Quistis in FF8 and have them use a Whip ;)
Blue mages can wield basically anything the devs deem appropriate/thematically necessary. Unlike select other jobs, they're not defined by their weapon; the named characters in the franchise that were Blue mages in everything but name can attest to this.
I have felt this was a strong possibility as well. Even the absurd idea of two gun blades seems like a possibility to me... they have to push build up hype for a Tank role somehow.

I would almost want to refuse to use a gunblade job on principle. Gods those things look awkward and painful to hold and swing. Throwing the balance of a weapon so far off just ruins how effective it can be as a weapon.
