Confessions of a Toxic Elitist

Oh, don't be afraid to be blunt. I suffer from depression and I'm extremely harsh on myself, yes, but I'm also a writer, so I know to take criticism. I didn't necessarily run into this issue with Deltascape, because I got cocky after O2S and I switched to AST. Definitely a rude awakening. At this point, I feel like I was being hypocritical with my past threads now that I'm really seeing where I stand through parses as far as DPS goes. Didn't think some of you guys experienced anything similar to what I'm seeing now... I honestly thought you guys (the ones I've played with) were just that good.

Meh, DPS is over-rated if you ask me.
I'd rather run with someone who has low DPS but can do mechanics rights and we chip away slowly at the boss than someone who has amazing DPS numbers but can't figure out that the AOE circle glowing red on the floor is not something you want to stand in. The former might take a bit longer but we will ge through it, clear it and have a good time doing so. The latter is just going to waste mana, be dead more often than not and potentially cause a wipe as a result of poor play.
Funnily enough I was just having this same chat last night as I ran a dungeon with a monk who was in gear 8-10 levels lower than the dungeon and wasn't very good. If you're going to go undergeared, at least be good at your job and avoid mechanics that can kill you. Again, I wouldn't have minded if he done that and the DPS took a bit longer.

I guess all that will be garnered from this topic is you are who you are. you play the game how you play the game. Stop putting everyone on pedestals and trying to do what they do and get those levels. They aren't you and they aren't playing your style or game. There is no fun in always playing catch up to someone else. I've seen your posts around and you seem like a nice enough person from what I can tell. I certainly wouldn't call you a Toxic Elitist if that's worth anything and we all know the opinion of a stranger you've never met on the internet carries the most weight :D

I am depressiv, i have 14 years MMORPG life, with 10 in "hardcore playing" with the focus on top content.
I was sometime bad, sometime good. I speak with the class i did decide to play (never to a class "because it is the best now) so sometime, i was good... and could never hope be top1 damages in my guild :p

The main thing is being able to accept being bad. Parser are a good way for this because you can see it yourself...


BUT Damages are not alpha and omega of a good player. sometime, loosing a little damages to do perfectly the strategy is far more useful than a godlike DPS. For FFXIV, it is mainly to fast swich to adds, and take as low damages from ennemies technic as possible. Dont just focus on what damages you done but look more point. Parser can show more than just your DPS! If, on the same fight, you take less damages, you request less heal, healers get more time to damages. Same if adds die fast.

Lastly, when you try to be at best performance, there is the temptation to play the best class of the moment, even more in a game like FFXIV where you can change job with no matters. NO NO NO! Play the job you like. if you are dragoon, play it because you like it, not because the parser says you to play it. If tomorrow, you finally prefer to play red mage, play it because you want it! You play a game!

Senor hit it bang on, while yes in the past i have dealt with rude people that made me feel different in general i am my own worst critic.
Also @ Kerwin, it annoys the hell out of me when people always reference fflogs, it's not like a bible of ffxiv

1) I like your threads. Regardless of good/bad, people come to them to have some actual discussions. I like discussions. Makes slow work days less slow.

2) Your logs aren't flattering, but the good news is that you can use that to improve. 9th percentile without dying means you're not active or staggeringly undergeared (likely both). Looking at your train log, you have lower CPM than I do, as a melee tank with a 2.43 GCD and you guys did the skip. That's a clear issue. You need to ALWAYS (A) BE (B) CASTING (C).

Most poor DPS players don't understand this.

3) Contrary to popular belief most "elitists" are ACTUALLY people in your situation. Not you specifically (because I don't think you fit the bill based on previous discussions), but it's usually some really bad player who thinks he knows what he is talking about. The amount of times I've been given "tips" by 9th percentile tanks in Savage who only have cleared O5S, meanwhile I'm working enrage on God Kefka.

If what he said was actually viable valid advice, but telling me to hide behind the remorse ghost box and yelling at me saying I don't know what I'm doing when I have TW for every knockback... Or the same guy asking me why didn't you pop FoF on the chimney? OR YET AGAIN the same guy yelling at me to kite the ghost (I didn't need too, by time it got to me, it'd be cleared by the saintly light.) Then when the fending stuff drops (I didn't actually need any of it), he goes awful PLD, hope he doesn't get the loot and I'm sitting here just rolling my eyes.

DPS is one of your main responsibilities. It is equally as vital as holding threat, positioning mobs, and using your defensive utility. Using cooldowns is nothing more than a single binary button press at a specific time and requires exceptionally little thought. Threat is trivially passive, unless you're optimizing DPS and as far as positioning goes, it's largely irrelevant in current encounter design, save for some savage fights, which your logs do not indicate you participate in.

You know I didn't think Susano was the easiest primal ever put in the game either. Lakshmi? Sure. Sophia? Sure? Ifrit EX (if you're not a healer? Sure). Maybe I'm bad at geometry but it took me like 5 pulls to finally figure out the lightning cloud mechanic (blind day 1). Normally stuff like that is 1-2 pulls tops for me (and I'm actually a VERY slow learner compared to people of equal skill).

I too am getting old :( I really wanted to do UCoB, but I just can't justify learning an 18 minute fight. I'm not 18 anymore and don't have the time needed and my core group of friends who would make that easily learn-able within a casual timeframe (all previous top raiders in WoW) won't try FF14 except my brother lol.

I'd say no, I guess the best term I use to describe myself is "confidently humble". What I mean by that is I'm confident in what I do yes, but I keep myself at earth's level and don't develop an ego over myself. I am only human after all, I'm not perfect and yes I do make mistakes. I don't let the shake up's get to me to where its eating at my soul to the point of getting really super depressed over it. I like to take those shake ups and turn them into a positive learning experience on how not to let it happen again.

FFlogs is a tool, incredibly useful when used correctly.
(Disclaimer, everything I'm about to say is dependent on my information being correct, FFlogs gets really fussy with my phone.)
You have a single recorded kill each on Phantom Train and Demon Chaddernook as SMN. That sample size is far too small to be anywhere indicative of how well you perform.
Furthermore, both of those kills are from March 7th which is really late into the tier. You aren't just ranked against SMN of similar gear level, you are ranked against all SMN who upload. Get some more kills under your belt and start to look for an upward swing in your numbers.

Ideally what you want to see is a steady increase in your performance after each kill. Have a "Just a little bit better this time" attitude.

Everyone likes to think they're good at what they're doing...thats kind of human nature and nothing wrong with it. Being worse than you think you are is also normal and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Really, the only issue is the one you've already identified; that you aren't actually at the level you think you are. From here you can either choose to accept that you don't play at the level you thought you did ( which is perfectly fine if thats what you want), or start training if you want to get better; beat that dummy like a red-headed step child and practice your times on the SB version of SSS to see if you can beat your best time, ask for advise, find a mentor to help you...I believe there's plenty on the forums willing to help.

You have a desire to get better, now you just need the time and practice to get there. Everyone progresses at a different rate, just stick with it and you'll get there eventually.

A simple rant topic from a cartoon character, those who know who Foamy is, gives a simple perspective on how humanity seems to lack simple common sense. As a life long gamer, there has been times where yes people have tried to put me down and it really is no different than cyber bulling. However, the one thing to keep in mind is that mostplayers that can't comprehends simple human interaction and over react over a video game really tells you that they have security issues and just need a place where they feel superior outside of their normal lives either do to unwanted /unfavorable circumstance in which they drag themselves in. I think everyone gets to that point and unfortunately gaming is an outlet for most of us to escape reality. How we react to these people however is entirely up to us and while we may not like to be in a situation where we feel like quitting, it is up to us to acknowledge their existence. The quote I posted is my response to those players who think they can get to me. It reminds me that unfortunately their are those who like to belittle others, maybe this game is all they are good for, maybe their just looking for someone to take out their frustration. Point is don't let them get to you they hate that the most :P

I have bad anxiety and it makes tanking pretty hard for me. I always think I'm doing bad ever since I met 2 players that mocked me and called me a waste of space over a few mistakes when I was level 29 (this was on another character). I've been nervous about tanking ever since. I met one person in duty finder that said I was a good tank, and that I did almost as good as their static tank (not sure what static means). A friend thinks I do a good job on keeping aggro but thinks I get nervous on mechanics, whats worse is I have no idea if any of that is true. Some suggest I start as DPS and I've been made fun of for saying this before. I feel like there is way too much to keep track of not sure how to word this, but it's like the rotations seem way to much for me to remember not sure if that makes any sense. I know that sounds really lame but it's true sadly. I do always take advice though, so I truly hope I am able get better eventually.
