I did it just for this post. All I did was what I just said. I stand on the wall/fence with my bridge in storage. Have Item Display Preview active and put the bridge where I liked it, selected place (since putting down by hitting X doesn't work with purple lights) and it appears there. I rotated it switching from controller to mouse and keyboard and was done. Maybe try with the item not exactly ON the fence but maybe ever so slightly outside of your fence.
Edit: that's the closest I can get it to for now. Close enough I think.

Have you tried using the storage glitch while being angled sideways and then rotating... vs. pointing your body directly at the spot you're trying to place the item. Sometime I find I can get more wiggle room with the angle/rotate item approach.

I really wanted to do this to have a private path to the Shirogane beach, but the beach is at a lower elevation than my plot so the bridge just floats above the ground.
