Concern about the Aetherytes

On top of everything else... would YOU trust a conscript to escape your grasp?

Unless the 'ride-along' teleport is a canon thing, anyone who tries to use Mass Aetheryte transport as a war tactic needs to work with the fact that your soldiers are going to each be finding their own way across the Aetherial Sea... which means if they're a conscript... you're giving them license to maybe just run off to ANYWHERE they think you won't be able to reach them.

Also, if Mass Teleport IS a thing... it's likely even rarer than the skill to teleport just yourself.

Huh. I've never actually thought about this before, but can pureblooded Garleans even USE Aetherytes? I assume not, given their inability to manipulate aether. It would explain why Cid wasn't able to come help us in person that one time in SB (Though conversely makes the fact that he was able to pop over to Kugane just to introduce us to the Lexentales somewhat baffling).

I don't think Pureblood Garleans can use aetherytes, but now that I think about it, I can't remember where I read that. So take this with the appropriate skepticism.

Garleans have their own teleportation tech, of course. It seems to be fairly robust, given that we use it in Dzemael Darkhold long after it was abandoned by all concerned, and Cid and Nero can set up a teleport point relatively quickly (of course, they're geniuses). I'm not sure how Cid showed up in Kugane, though.

I don't think it's just Cid and Nero (or at least, not anymore). The Imperial Outpost in Western Thanalan houses the teleportation device that leads to Castrum Marinum. We see a similar device in Doma that leads to the imperial outpost there. So Garlean Teleportation is a thing in the military at least. I'll be very interested in how they explain Aetherytes/Teleportation once we get to Garlemald.

On the other hand, Aetherytes do naturally occur and most old cities were based around a natural Aetheryte. That only really changed when the Sharlayans figured out how to manufacture them.

Regula is also shown to make use of a portable teleportation device during The Warring Triad story-line. As it stands, it seems like Magitek does an excellent job at mimicking many forms of magic - so much so that I do not think it unreasonable to suggest that once we see the inner territories of Garlemald the 'aetherytes' in their settlements will likely be some sort of magitek based construct.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that we see lots of examples of magitek teleportation in Garlean bases, but Cid and Nero somehow manage to create teleport points (or something akin to those, anyway) while cut off from Garlemald support. Cid at least has the Ironworks for logistics purposes, and Nero probably uses the same, but it does imply that magitek teleportation can be accomplished by civilian means, rather than purely military.

Off the top of my head, there could be the handwave that the aetherytes are for the non-purebloods, and the teleport fees are the tax they have to pay for the government to maintain this parallel quick-travel network.

Or we could just be using Garlean magitek teleports, which happen to work exactly like aetherytes (including linking into the existing aetheryte networks we already have), just skinned differently. That might be a bit more trouble for the lore team to justify, though, so I think they'll just use aetherytes and say it's for non-purebloods.

I doubt that it'd be too difficult for the lore team to justify. The full capabilities of Magitek has only loosely been touched upon, anyway - and it's very likely that there's significantly more powerful/valuable technology in the inner territories. After all, Regula even goes so far as to conjure a ceruleum familiar. We've also seen a lot of Allagan technology re-purposed by Garlean forces and teleportation seemed to be fairly common back in the glory days of Allag. A lot of it seems to have been left intact, too despite all the years that have passed.

I would imagine that rather than attunement, you would have to register yourself (like at chocobo-keeps) at each piece of teleport tech for security reasons to be able to use it, and the fees you pay maintain the network.
