something that tries to be edgy and winds up being silly is better than not trying at all imo. I apologize for the salt but it gets frustrating when your supposed be in the middle of a war and you look like your ready for a candle light dinner.

You can't begrudge people for wanting that option. It'd be like mocking emo's for favouring black in such a colourful reality. Option being the key-word, here. Having said that, they can make sets that are a) true to the theme of the class while b) not looking like the ugly, overblown white-messes they consistently stick to.
I'm not begrudging it at all. I'm just extrapolating why I think SE refuses to give us less soft options for healers.
The best solution, I think, would be designing the next healer with a base concept that isn't "soft." Force SE out of the white robe corner.
Chemist, Geomancer, Druid, shoot, it went as far as someone conceptualizing Necromancer as a healer.
*nods* That was in my thread regarding whether or not SE could add any new healing jobs to the game.
Like you, I feel someone dressed too edgy as a healer would come off as a joke. However, I understand why players want something different. The healer gear contest had several great entries that I'd love to have in the game.
I will admit, if you like feminine, robey, white attire, there is no shortage of gear for you to choose from if you play a healer. Some sets I can think of that deviate from this are the Orthodox healing set, Diabolic healing set, Makai Moon Guide's healing set, and Plague Doctor's healing set. You can also look into gear that can be worn by all classes such as the Proto Ultima Mesh (that's pretty edgy for a healer).
If you want DRK kind of edginess for a healer, it probably isn't going to happen in this game. It's just so unorthodox for a franchise who has a very specific image of its healers. If DNC is ever introduced (right up SEs alley), you can expect even more femininity, grace, and ballerina type fight style than even our current WHM.
I'm all for new things so long as the integrity of the franchise and game remains intact. However, the fluff that surrounds our current healers is part of the appeal towards the role for me. Om a side note though, I am still wishing SE would release a more aggressive military style of attire for SCH. I am also tired of all the damn robes.
Military uniforms for SCH would be perfectly in line with lore. Sadly, though after this last patch, I don't GEO would really be the one to break us healers out of white robe hell as these West Asian designs are still white robes...
If we're heading to Aldenard in 5.0, then maybe my old "Chemists were old Garlean combat medics" concept has a little merit, afterall? Could get us something fresh and different, at least. (TP healing, anyone?)
Lost Allagan healer gloves are definitely more armor-y than robe-y. Darklight boots of healing are armor-y.
There are some specific sets like Odin's Dark Divinity Feet/Hands that let you get a more armored appearance as well.
I don't want to be "edgy" or "menacing", I just want to be able to wear more armoured pieces.
My own gripes stem more from the restrictive glamour system rather than from not being enough of a specific "type" of gear.
