It is just a symbol to be accepted as a official Garlean Officer.
The Gunblade is a standard issue weapon given to Garlean Soldiers and they normally do not allow non-Garleans to use one unless they have proven themselves by becoming officer rank.
A lot of Garlean low rank Soldiers we fight do not have Gunblades because by their blood they are not Garlean but are either conscripted from conquered areas or raised into Garlean society from conquered areas.
Was Fordola given Gaius' Gunblade, Heirsbane?

The real reason officer enemies didn't have gunblades was because the 1.0 models just used regular swords, you can tell the centurions are supposed to be purebloods because they are always taller than other hyur races and have unique voices/lines. The only officers to use gunblades outside of cutscenes were in ala mhigo and even then they didn't even give them abilities or animations that use the gun part of the weapon and just do generic auto-attack and fast blade alternations.Quote:

Heirsbane is just a standard Gunblade anyway...it only has a special name because Gaius used it to kill 9 aspirants to the crown.
