I thought the smart phone app was free, and the app is far more convenient than the physical token.

Figured Square would have charged for the app, but it looks like it's free as people are saying... but completely and utterly broken from what the reviews are saying. Yikes. Anyone with the alternatives know if it's in any better shape?

People only post reviews when things don't work. There's a thread around dedicated to someone fearing the app and it's just page after page of people saying they've never had issue with it- myself included.

All right. I'll give it a shot, though I do have this old-world mentality of trusting physical objects more than digital ones (and my ToR and Blizzard Authenticators have yet to fail me despite being quite old now), so I might pick up the physical one at a later time if the app fails.

The app works fine I have used it since 2.0 launched and recently switched phones was able to deactivate it from old phone and download and active it on new phone and continue using it without any problem so no it not completely and utterly broken.

I used to have the physical authenticator, but switched to the app when they released it. I've never had any issues with either.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'm back in the game now. Hopefully when the weather heats up, the laptop won't cause me any problems with the game. Glad Square is so anal-retentive about security, even if it does result in much head smashing on desks. =D

I had to spend the money on a physical authenticator. The smartphone/tablet app is for iOS/Android only. I use Windows Phone. There's no WP version! My tablet is also Windows.

I didn't even have to read the body of your text to give you this answer because this question pops up here and there.

Long story short; You should be using a security token anyways:

A physical security token came with 1.0 and ARR. I have been using my 1.0 one ever since, it sits just under my monitor, love it!
I distrust that I wont lose phone/it will die somehow so I wont use the phone app, but you use what is best for you.
