Consider how people would react if they did expand retainer inventory. At +40 slots per retainer, that would be +80 free slots for a typical user, but an extra +240 slots for someone who pays for the full 8 retainers. That would make paid retainers seen like even more of an advantage/requirement. I imagine there would be significant negative feedback as a result, even along with the positive.
