This pretty much sums up how I feel about SAM. I also agree that any "flashy" stuff would have done this job a huge disservice. It is flashy where it needs to be.
It falls in line with what I was expecting. Overall my impression hasn't changed from before the live letter; I'll give it a try and see how it feels. It wouldn't be the first time something looked good/bad in a video and felt completely different playing it.
1. There are still actions we havent seen.
2. Samurai looked amazing from what we've seen so far.
Yeah I think I'll enjoy the class despite it feeling a bit lackluster in some areas if I give it a chance. Like you said, sometimes just a few abilities looking cool can be enough to make you come back to the class. The Samurai AoE/spiral attack that it did during the live letter video looked amazing, for example. If anything I think just running around Kugane with my sword unsheathed in sprint mode will be enough to satisfy me haha. I really like the aesthetic of samurai as a whole, but I think maybe watching too much Bleach and Samurai Champloo (looking at you Mugen) may have biased my opinion a bit.
I honestly think FFXIV skills are too flashy as it is. You can literally make certain bosses disappear in combat effects when you have a large enough group. I thought the samurai looked quick, efficient, and deadly.
I do not even get what so special about Amatsu: Tsukikage, I thought sam was fine, can't wait to try it. Also a lot of WS have FFXI references, that is always neat. Tachi: Gekko, Tachi: Enpi, Tachi: Yukikaze
I keep seeing this complaint and I have to imagine it's only because RDM is a god damn fireworks factory, by comparison, so it set an absurdly high bar. I mean to be fair RDM makes MOST of the other jobs look like shit by comparison.
Like others have said SAM has an elegance and simplicity to it. I will say it's big potency attack (the one that uses up the full gauge) COULD be a bit flashier since that's their big nuke strike. Other then that it looks great.
The skills of this incarnation of Sam look similar to those of ffxi, some of the skill names are even the same. Sam is about precision and being efficient, it has a medium amount of flash and that's all it needs.
If you want lazers exploding everytime you use a skill pick a different class, the lore behind sam doesn't flow with lazer explosions, sorry.
It has elegance and as I said, medium amounts of flash, proper sam attack animations, proper body physics, they did a great job making sam. Not evey class needs mountains of flash per weaponskill, it has the proper amount and any past-era sam would tell you the exact same thing, precision and deadliness, timing and honor.
I can't feel anything about what we were shown because I haven't experienced it. They did say that Samurai and Red Mage would be available to play at one of the conventions or something, I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere anyway. Ask the people who try them out about it, you can't tell if you like something just by looking at it.
Still gonna main it.
