Hitsuzen, the only real difference between getting a Collectible for exp, or for getting "end game stuff", is one focuses on getting many low tier Collectibles, the other focuses on getting a few high tier Collectibles.
Yellow Copper Ore, for example, is something like 60k exp at the low end, 66k exp in the middle, and 72k at the top. Getting additional YCO Collectibles is preferable, exp-wise, to getting less at the higher tier, because two 60k are worth 120k in total, while one 66k or one 72k are only worth 66k or 72k.
IIRC Yellow Copper Ore, and its botany equivalent, require 240 Collectability to hand in. Until you are at the point where you can start using Single Mind (level 57 ability) you only need 500 GP to collect these : Toil, Discerning Eye->Methodical Appraisal, Methodical Appraisal, collectx4. This will work if your Perception is high enough that you are getting 172 and 115 on those two Methodical Appraisals, respectively. If it does not total 240, then you will need to do another Methodical Appraisal and only collect 3. This costs 500 GP in total.
This, at least, is a starting point, and will help you get comfortable with gathering Collectibles. Higher level Collectibles are a little bit harder, and do take 600 (or better, 650 GP, to add in the 5% gathering chance buff) in order to use the requisite abilities, and do not permit Toil.
