Yes, server merge does is meant for after the major exodus expected to happen in 1~3 weeks...when billing start.
IMO even if they rush jobs to come out in 1.20 the exodus will happen...maybe not as harsh as if they leave jobs to 1.21, but still might happen.
But it's that thing...it all depends of how many player online they are expecting per peak ingame...if they have an optimal number around 2000-3000 players (FFXI Optimal) then they might be already planning some server merges...but if they have some lower number, like 1000-1500 players, then they might not be that worried for now...for this second number i'd say servers might be working in 20-30% of their capacity right now, which is enough to not have "issues" at afterpatch growth. -

I've played this game since it's sorry release in 2010. In the beginning, the game was flooded with lots of great people. Unfortunately SE lost, God only knows how many customers/players due to ..... anyway, the people are gone and my world, for one (Fabul) is a damn ghost town. The economy is worse than recession.
Yes, I think merging is an excellent idea. They can give a list of worlds/servers that will temporarily be shut down and also give a list of worlds that will remain in service. We should be given the opportunity to choose which world/server we would like to be merged into. My idea is that the merge be only temporary and then everyone would be sent home at the release of 2.0.
It's just an idea and a suggestion because there is nobody to play with at the moment on fabul. I am an American living in the United Kingdom. Since moving here, obviously, my play times have changed. Granted, there are more players on during the hours of 12 Noon till Midnight (EDT) but the hours I play, 7am to Midnight (GMT), the server is quite dead. It begins to liven up just a bit when the times start to overlap, but still, very little.
I Vote yes for a merge. I seriously doubt that we'll see it happen, but who knows, maybe after they start charging and every server is so low on players that they have no choice, they might conside it. -

SE will never merge their server, even the population on one server is less then 10%. They are too much of a big company to except their game isn't doing that well. Merging server will just make bad press and news headline for them. There is already tons of bad review on them, they do not need anymore. This is why they never took the game off and rebuild it even the population will reach very very low. Merging server mean to them the game is not doing so well so it not gonna happen.

Well, seems like people didn't even wait the billing to leave...in case people didn't notice, they just tossed, with just a few hours hrs between each, all their wildcards regarding 1.20 at once today.
They shown the "AH", the player search and the new dyeing...if they also toss the traits list then tey're REALLY concerned about the pop drop since the announcement...because they're making sure everyone here still know what will be coming at 1.20 in details in a try of appealing them enough to stay til 1.20.
If things are really this bad, server marge will become really unavoidable. -
