Strange  I've been a controller user since i started (playing on ps3 and then eventually ps4) and I've never had an issue with the soft targeting. It's honestly the best thing ever in terms of healing, for me at least. But then again I usually have a trigger held down constantly as soon as i enter combat, on all my jobs.
I don't honestly think there's a way to disable it.. I've dug through the options and can't find anything.. unless I overlooked it.. Odd though, as thorough as they are with giving options and customizable settings, they do miss a lot of little things, like this.

Can one not just delete or alter the associated keybind?

I am also looking for a solution to this.
In Mixed mode this is a big problem for me, when I come back from RT+LT extra bars I have no idea which bar (if any) I'll come back to, only to press d-pad up and target myself, or B and drop target.
The game actively prevents you from changing this. I apparently 'have to' have a drop target button.

Ahh this old issue. I've come across this many times. Lost Enochian or greased Lightning as a result. Sometimes is because I've targeted myself or another party member, others it's because I've grazed the touchpad and it's "left clicked" the sceen, cancelling my targeting completely.
One I found yesterday when doing Treasue Maps was I kept selecting the chest as the first target until I rotated my camera to remove the chest from the screen.
I'm sure there is a fix, as someone mentioned in the settings to cancel selecting chests but I don't really want to keep adjusting settings every time I want to select a chest to select them and readjust when I'm going to fight to ignore them.

Controller is strictly for movement for me. Can't be asked to use WASD. I use F keys and Filter targeting settings to get the best experience.

I use soft targeting on ps4, would not want to lose it.

Id imagine changing your methods of targeting, such as when ur weapon is out, u cant target yourself/allies, etc.
I know theres a way to change a preset of what u can or cant target as well, regardless if ur weapon is out or not, though i dont bother with that one.

What I want as a mixed mode user (due to RSI I have to use this mode for pain management):
1. Coming from from expanded LT+RT having a predictable result that doesn't require extremely precise timing. IE:
I'm on RT (mixed mode is a toggle mode), I use RT+LT or LT+RT to press a button on my expanded bars (expanded bar access is a trigger hold mode), when I release in either trigger order I want to go back to RT or into no trigger held at all, not have it random depending on what I released first in which milisecond.
2. A way to 'lock' my target, when I end up in no trigger held I will sometimes press up thinking I'm on either RT or LT, I am now the soft target and have to use a macro to clear it, terrible.
I pressed B, I now lost my target.
I pressed X, I now have my context menu open.
I pressed B, didn't notice and pressed X, my map is now open!

Let me lock my target or alternatively unbind deselect target and open context menu in battle, there is no way to do this! You must always have a cancel button regardless of what you do or how you bind your controller.
I would have to run extreme scripts that click on specific pixels on the screen to emulate this behavior!
Currently I use macros on R3 and L3 that will fix it and select the nearest target, why is this necessary?
Please invest even a few minutes to look at mixed mode, if you at least fix the expanded bar randomness that would go a long long way.
Thank you.
