5% mitigation that doesn't need to be updated until after 30min? Sounds good.

I don't care about how strong it is. It's invisible power that you completely forget about after the first cast, and that makes it boring. Therefore it should be reworked, and the damage values of bosses should be adjusted to be the same as they currently are with Protect.
There are other things you can do with a healer job so it's not boring play a different job. Fact of the matter is that it is a needed skill, other jobs have their needed skills. It's all going to get re-worked so you don't have to level a job to get the cross skills that are required to do the job you want. Like for another example neededing to level pld to lv 34 to get awareness to use for war or drk.
The cross class system could have been amazing if they really tried to rework it. Its kind of a shame they settle for what it is and changing to cater to the 1 job only people and the level potion users. Could the system use some work, yes. I prefer the 1.0 version where we could use any ability or spell but thats just me!
It's not much fun being forced to level additional jobs, you don't want to play, just to be a "complete" character. I don't want to be a BLM and having to take BLM up to get Swiftcast is a royal pain in the tuckus. I say the same for crafting; I want to weave, not hammer, and having to level CRP, CUL, and BSM to be a good Weaver, is also a pain. I've done it to do it, but I loathe those parts of "role completion". I'd trade this, for a linear single-role skill tree without looking back.
Finally, you and I have something we can agree on.
Protect is basically a non-skill skill, and I recently made a post about this on another message board.

A buff that you're never expected to not have doesn't need to exist, period. It should be changed into more active mitigation of some kind, and it should just become something White Mages handle as their own unique mechanic.
Is it really that difficult for you to cast protect at the start of the dungeon? After that you don't normally have to cast it again, it's not like it has a long cast time like stone skin 2. As things stand right now it is one of the needed skills every healer should have, what would make things more interesting is if they gave mobs a de-buff skill to remove your buffs if they haven't done so yet, that would make you need to be paying attention to make sure it stays up.
I think there may be some mobs already that have de-buff skills to remove buffs on your party but I can't be sure.
Making protect a white Mage only ability is just plain stupid, whm has the strongest heals out of the 3 healer jobs and not giving sch and ast protect puts them at a disadvantage. Yes they each have some skills to buff def on a limited short timer but that won't make a difference when their heals are generally weaker, sch without the fairy couldn't heal to save their life if the fairy gets killed which I have seen happen.
