If you're going for max profit sure, if you're just going for getting the materials and catalysts without needing the marketboard though, then it is not a wasted venture. I am not all about "MORE GIL! MUST HAVE OCTODECILLIONS OF GIL NAOW!" - I like to instead be more self-sufficient and use my own skills and those of my retainers only to gather materials and catalysts. Even if that means less profitable ventures.

I haven't got to the point of being able to do Aetherial Reduction, so I wasn't aware of that mechanic.

When I was thinking about this idea, I liked the thought of actually cleaving the cluster/crystal, and the animation that could go with it. Others have mentioned Alchemist due to functionality that was in 1.x. Logically, this could also be something that a goldsmith would do, since they already cut gemstones. That said, I think I was also considering that it would be nice for my gather jobs to have another purpose.
