Opt in would require opt out as well. And that has the potential to be exploited, I would think.
Everquest had several PVP servers once. And each non-PVP server had a number of NPC's (Priest of Discord) that could flag you, permanently, for PVP. In playing EQ since December of 2000 I only ever ran into one person with a red name (signifying PVP enabled) out of the thousands I've seen there. It just was not a popular thing to do there, and I doubt it will be all that popular a thing to do here.
It would be interesting to see what percentage of the population has more than, say, 10 or so PVP instances under their belts. 10-20, or more, would suggest that the person likes to PVP. Fewer would mean that a person tried it and did not care for it. Though there are those who don't care for it but did it for the glamour or the challenge log ...

inmho, im playing FFXIV to carebear, if i want to play PvP, ill go play my main game. so im not against it but i prefer if they don't do that.

Open World PvP would work well in this game if there were a condition to it.
An example is something like the new First Lieutenant outfit 'enabling' PvP in the open world, like BnS's system.
The only other way is to do what they did with dueling, a pop-up asking you to join x's party which is enabled for PvP.
PvE and PvP should be separate in the open world, by default. -

I can see this working only for specific PvP servers. We need an option to transfer to those server and back without a charge tough. There are many ways this can work. Options never hurt anyone. By making PvP servers people who don't like this idea won't be affected and people who like it they will have a place for it. If they do this like this then it's not a problem.

I would welcome open world PvP.
I don't really like the PvP maps because they are kind of boring and the main objectives (not actually PvP) get in the way of actual PvP.
What I am wondering is:
Will PvP be implemented on pre-existing servers?
Will there be new servers made?
Will we be able to turn it on and off?
If they make new servers, or if it isn't implemented on my server, I would be so sad because it's something I really want to do, but I don't want to leave my FC or friends to do it. -

Err, a lot of it would really depend on the rules and how it was implemented. Widening PvP would be a good thing. Not for myself, but I know inactive players who would jump back in as PvP becomes more accessible. That said, something really would need to be done so players can also opt out. Maybe the PvP zones could be implemented into the open world? Maybe a specific character status to opt in?
