I think at the end it realy depends on the amount of Japanese players that are still playing on their PS3. If you have noticed, Japanese games that are released for the PS4/PC only in the West are often also released for PS3 aswell in Japan. This shows that in Japan the PS3 is still being used by a large group of players, if FFXIV has a large group of players from Japan who do not want to upgrade to a PS4, then I doubt Yoshi-P will discontinue the PS3 version of FFXIV of the next expansion.

The sooner the PS3 support dies the better. Having gamed extensively with a PS3 player who then changed to PS4 I can confidently say that their experience was hampered & mine was negatively affected. Waiting for them to swap zones in instances, having them unable to see things like hunts, etc didn't make for a fun time.

also as far as improvements, unless 4.0 is being developed with ps3 off the board right off the bat, i mostly just see ui/memory, maybe some zone improvements being the bulk of the "immediate" improvements. -

If we look at other games Destiny just dropped PS3 support with the latest expansion. So if other devs are doing it FFXIV could do it as well add more features if they drop PS3.

PS3 could no longer be supported because the hardware requirements of current games are beyond it's capabilities!...
On a personal note I abandoned my PS3 and console gaming in favor of a new PC which offers way more quality than consoles could ever hope for, since PC is always ahead of them and limited only by the budget willing to be spent on hardware!... :)
