I got hung up on that a bit, too. Until now, each Tale has bridged a gap or has explained / given character to a change that happened off-screen. So, at a glance, this one seems to stand alone (so far) as not quite having a purpose aside from being a Tale for the sake of a Tale (not to say that Tales aren't nice on their own, I still enjoyed it).
...Or perhaps the purpose was to canonize all of the ways we (the lore forum, us) have picked on Alphinaud. The Tale sees him affirming feelings and commitments that we've assumed he must have, but based mostly on benefit of doubt as we make fun of him for being a clumsy child-diplomat that orders the Warrior of Light around.
