Laptop keeps getting too hot :(

What make and model is your laptop?

Heat at or by the touchpad could actually be a HDD, since its mostly common for a CPU & GPU to be towards the back left where the air vents are.. That's why we need to know brand and model. Ive encountered some mechanical HDDs to get very hot like that, especially those manufactured by Toshiba or some other second rate HDD vendor.. If its the HDD, cleaning may not do all that much for you. I'm only saying this because your temps are pretty good. If it's the HDD doing all that, that's an easy pop out & pop in procedure to replace, but windows, ect would need to be installed.

It's a Lenovo Z50 Laptop, I've ordered the palm pads previously suggested, to see if those help, and FPS is set to 15.

And I'm not too comfortable opening up the laptop on my own, much less removing the HDD to "pop out and pop in", afraid I'll break the entire thing.

I did however decide to run CoreTemp, and I'm sitting at around 52-54 celsius on FFXIV, and 41-42 idle (with both my cooling pad and a box fan on) which doesnt seem that hot, its just the computer is hot to the touch.

54c while gaming? That is pretty cool actually, esp since it's a laptop. Nothing to worry about. Of course the unit will get warm/hot during gameplay, that is normal as all normal gets.

Need not worry about things getting "too hot" Modern CPU's and GPU's are designed to "down-clock" once reaching a temperature threshold to protect itself from thermal damage.
