You can also grab low level gear relevant to the class by visiting its guild and talking to the new vendor NPC in there. I think the gear tends to go up to the 20's or 30's. There are NPCs in the adventurer's guilds that sell Level 1 starter gear for all classes now, too.
Edit: Also, I just want to throw out that if you have trouble finding a linkshell, if you're willing to remake your character you're welcome to join our little LS on Istory, which the ever-helpful Vydarr Tyr is a part of. It's fairly dead during the weekdays with everybody playing on the weekends, dunno if you are looking for anything more hardcore.
