Every April Fool's Joke Has a Nugget of Truth

Personally I'd rather keep anything that has to do with phones, and mobile devices away from the game. They sound like decent QoL improvements on the surface but will ultimately have severely high repercussions to the long term well being of the game. It would be unfair to reward players simply for owning phones leaving those without. phone at a disadvantage. For example being able to check your retainers via phone app would not only crash the market as undercuts would be more frequent then ever, but those without phones would have to camp the retainer bells far more often while those with phones could relist their products mid dungeon rarely ever having to see their bell again. And that's just one example of how mobile apps would destroy the game. There's many more out there. The idea of apps are cute, but if they give players any sort of advantage in game over non phone owners, it wouldn't bold over very well. And let's not even forget the possibilities that would open up for RMT...

I'd rather the dating sim turn out to be real

Probably a sort of auto pilot feature when riding a chocobo. Allowing it to fly or move to any destination on the map you click it to go to. I know I could have appreciated a feature like that everytime I did my daily beast quests because... I press R and then alt-tab >_>

Not having a smartphone these days, while apparently having the luxury of being able to play this subscription based game, is extremely rare. We're not talking about the 90s here, nor are we even talking about the early 2000's. In this day and age, teens (the age minimum for this game) generally have smartphones. It's almost an expectation these days. Again, teens, not infants/toddlers/etc.

The worry about the rather insignificant number of players in such a situation is not healthy for the games future. That's literally looking for something to worry about so you can stunt QoL benefits from happening. Progress is never made that way. Besides, being in that situation for said person, is likely the least of their concerns... RL tends to kick you in the ass a lot more often if you're that troubled financially.

Your concern about the undercuts is not going to be as disastrous as you think. WoW, for example, has their mobile armory which lets you do exactly this. Some were concerned about such a thing, but... it really didn't happen any more frequently than it would without it. Truth be told, a mobile access like that would allow almost everyone to take part in such a thing easier, but not many really care. Which means the ones that do, really don't have to lol.

To be honest, I doubt they'd do an AH connection of some sort simply due to how it works in the game currently. When we call out the retainers, we stop posting items. There's a real time removal of your goods from the economy/MB. Such a thing isn't exactly feasible when you carry it over to a mobile list type of UI on a phone, due to the likely speed of connecting between windows for each retainer. In other words, the ability to call a retainer and switch in less than a second on a phone means the game registers this as removing items from the board and listing them again in less than a second... doesn't sound plausible for the servers. If they removed the fact that you stop listing items when a retainer is called out, then the program is likely feasible. Until then though, it's not going to happen.

Edit: Oh and I can kind of understand a different viewpoint of not wanting mobile attachment to the game (though it already exists with the security key and benefits that come with using it). That being wanting everything to be involved with the game, in-game, alone. In other words, the way things were many years ago. The times have changed though, so this is just kind of how it works until the popular mediums change again (or revert in the case of the old).

Instead of "Nuggets of Truth", can we just get chicken nuggets this time? :-D

There's not always a truth hidden in the jokes, like with the NPC dating system they did one year, nothing came of that, I doubt there's anything more to this one.

Is your not having one keeping you from playing it? No, didn't think so. Likewise, is someone not affording additional retainers keeping them from playing the game? No, didn't think so. In light of that example right there, your fears fall very very short.

By your reply alone, it's very obvious that you're treating the hypothetical situation as though it is mandatory to have every additional function of the game to even play. Your initial fear (and technically fear mongering) gets you nowhere when we have other functions that are optional, but don't break the game.

You mean, my chocobo won't get Wi-Fi? I so was looking forward to browsing the EWW (Eorzean-Wide Web) for my dissertation on Ascians due in July.
