People are abusing the Novice channel.

Seems like I've done the right thing waiting before becoming a mentor. I want to be in a position to really help others before I sign up to be a mentor (I have met all the requirements but I don't feel I'd make a good mentor at the moment), so it seems this will have the double effect of making sure I'm ready AND putting out most of the abusers so that there's more room for me to actually help.

There was a certain poster in my requirements thread who had no faith in the community to use it right and was adamant that this system was going to be abused and it wouldn't work... Everyone said they're too paranoid.

So you are just going to go around yelling about how you and they were right? Ok, some of us were wrong, now let's see how could the system can be fixed.

On Malboro, since I've been in the Channel, we've only had to kick someone one time. Other than that, those of us in there pretty much know/know of each other, so things are usually great. We kinda use it as huge linkshell while also giving as much advice as we can.

Balmung didn't seem that bad yesterday night. My first time getting pulled into the Network once I was done with a raid last night, I suggested that all mentors should lay some ground rules. The Mentors in the Novice Network make or break that "first impression" of the community of your server. It's kind of serious thing to talk about in Novice network channel as this could indirectly affect new players not wanting to play, affecting FFXIV subs. It becomes a potential snowball effect if not strictly handled.

Another problem is the fact nobody has real authority over another person. Were all mentors. It seems some servers have great communities and people can come to an agreement, but on some, if anyone tries to lay down some rules or at least try and moderate the chat, they get stick from other players who don't agree. Plus, as I've mentioned in another thread, some "moderators" are simply selfish players who want the fancy crown and access to 10 extra Lore's a day. They couldn't care less what happens in the Novice channel and laugh at anyone who tries to use it properly.

After reading a lot of feedback, I think I'll stick to helping newbies the old fashioned way. Well, what few newbies manage to squeeze through the character creation restrictions.

Hey I never once said it was going to fail. I wanted the system I thought it was going to do good too but apparently the majority of the community doesn't care about new people.

And its only the beginning. It's not going to get better anytime soon because the rewards will be coming soon and people will flock them. I don't know how they could fix the system. No way to "tell" who's bad and who's good.

This is why they need higher requirements, or a much longer, harder process to become a mentor. Make it so it's only worth it if you truly want to help people and not just for the crown and extra tomes.
