I had a run one day with me as a BLM, a SMN and a healer. We popped out Titan Egi and actually got through most of the dungeon without a tank. Was honestly really fun.
Doing a run of Brayflox's Longstop when I started leveling ninja awhile back, was in a party with a Red Mage, Scholar, and Paladin.
Paladin was undergeared a decided to pull everything short of the first boss. We wiped. Restart and again the Paladin pulls everything short of the first boss, we managed this time around since we managed to kill a few before wiping. First boss goes down easy and the Paladin is back at it again pulling everything short of the next boss. We wipe, healer leaves, an Astrologian comes in pretty quick.
Paladin asks if they can pull six mobs to which our new healer says no and the tank leaves. Wait for a bit before one of them suggests pushing forward, taking it slow one mob at a time and in doing so we managed to get through the second boss and even get a good ways to the third before a new tank arrives.
Not nearly as impressive as these other stories, but honestly the first and only time so far something like this has happened and one of my most memorable dungeon runs.
When both DPS die and the healer figures it's best to take care of the one they've had the least trouble with keeping alive.. oh wait, this is about running without tanks. Carry on.
Oh yeah, these situations are always fun(well, for me as a DPS - healer types might find them stressful). Tank has connection issue(or quits or whatever), the rest of the group should absolutely try to keep pulling. Try to stick to single groups rather then mass pulls, spread the damage around a little so no one is taking too much of the healers focus, dodge as much excess damage as you can, and try to keep a tight DPS rotation. Over the years ive BLM tanked almost every dungeon from 15-60 when this situation arises, and a good group can always make progress(and sometimes even finish) while waiting for a tank to return or a replacement to join.
Hey there! I know this post is old but I'm on a quest to find a very old friend who I played FFXI with on ps2 at launch 20 years ago! Sorata is all I have to go on. That was his name and he was from New York I think. Just wondering if you might be him! Please let me know!
