It can also be said that all open-world PvP will do is chase yet more people off of PvP, further fueling PvP woes about queue times, making it even less of a thing in the game and speeding it to it's inevitable end. XI's ballista is a prime example of this inevitable end. I remember riding through Passhow while the heralds were announcing a game and seeing noone at the herald for the game. Ballista was as open-world as XI's PvP got, to be sure, but PvP is still PvP.
Sorry, I don't want open world PVP. I do understand that there are players who enjoy PVP but I am not one of them. At best I may play a few matches here and there.
My experience (through my MMO history) with open world pvp has been overall negative. I quite like the fact that XIV is PvE/story focused.
The closest I wish XIV to ever get to actual open world pvp is something like FFXI's Ballista where players signed up for matches in a zone. Those that didn't sign up cannot participate in PvP and are allowed to look on.
That being said, I do agree that PvP in XIV needs some love but I would rather not have open world PvP.
I say it should go in the direction of " The optional Flagging System ".
We have Factions (The Grand Companies). From them through GC Credits/Allied Seals/Centurio we can Obtain a Special Piece of Equipment (An Accessory) that when equipped activates PvP for that Individual, and they can only attack and be attacked by those who also have it active. They then can duel with the opponents who wear the opposite faction's items directly and freely. An Indicator of it being active can be a Red(Maelstrom)/Yellow(Adders)/Blue(Flames) small Arrow/Triangle pointing down above them. There can be a Cast bar when putting it on, and when Taking it off (Cause why not? We're putting Cast Bars on everything!).
A PvP area is...Bleh. Most people are going to avoid it who dont want to PvP, and having to travel to the same spot all the time just to wreck someone ? I want to bump into an Adder/Flame with their PvP on in Costa so I can be like " You in the wrong parts Boi... ". or get in on some action if I see one of my Boys getting wrecked.
Players with their Item on cannot be affected by the skills of those who do not have the items equipped (RIP those who get wrecked by other sources with their item still equipped). Buffs Placed beforehand are dropped in a similar manner of switching classes, and PvP skills become active but can only be used on PvP active Players.
Individuals who have had ganking experiences in the past wont have that as a Valid reason to be against it (Those that say no just cause no lol). People will be able to watch others PvP without any issues...and it wont always be the same god damn place.
A distant dream I guess lol.
just make Carteneau an area ppl can zone into freely much like any other map in eorza. open world pvp there, no side quests or story quests there. everyones happy
as much life as most zones old and new ranging anywhere from central shroud to the gold saucer. still gives people who do enjoy pvp a place to do so freely without hoping duty finder can find enough people balanced between the grand companies. or if a couple friends want to duel, they have a place to do so. or there's even the proving grounds at the foundation, why not put that to some use
I really do miss the open world pvp aspect of WoW. Most people won't like it though so limiting it to a single area's (that is shared by the datacenter) a viable option.
Yoshida did say that he wanted to polish up FFXIV's PvP but it's not happening at the moment.
You know, with the upcoming airship stuff, I think they really could implement a successful open world PvP system. If you make the islands instanced zones, you could also make them unsynced open PvPvE zones. Thematically, they would just be contested, uncharted islands. "Winning" an island would give you temporary control over the area and unlock all the gathering nodes for your alliance.
There are obviously a lot of problems to iron out but I think it's a necessary step to take. The strength you have in this game needs to mean more. As is, it's reduced to looking pretty while standing around in town.
