I do agree they need to allow us to dye each set of color on the outfit and even if the player wanted the outfit to be 100% jet black, let em they are doing it for themselves. I know for me as much as I do love the Gambler set, kinda hard to find a color I like that goes with the forever purple parts it uses.
dying something one flat colour just wouldn't work. You'd be left with nothing but an indistinct blob. The only way I can see this happening is all gear has just a shadow original (greyscale). Then when you add the colour you get the necessary light/dark areas. I'm not convinced that would look very interesting either, but it's about as close as you could hope for.
There's gear like the Hidemaster's Apron and the Forgemaster's Redingote which sports like 5 different dye tones, so they're definitely experimenting with the limitations of only being able to use one dye while making it look good yet not monotone. In the case of the Redingote (BSM chest), the shirt dyes the primary color, the collar dyes a high brightness pale hue, the sash and shirt detailing dyes a dark desaturated hue, the apron dyes a light desaturated hue, the leather bits tint very very slightly, and it doesn't look monotone at all. It's becoming more complex and looks quite nice tbh. It's no secondary dye coloring like we all want but if they can keep up the color quality from the crafting i170 gear I'm ok with it.
While I do understand why it works the way it is, heck even why it's being done... I do find it very bad form to have gear that dyes two-tone but not giving us the option to decide about that secondary colour. Most of the time (in my experience) that secondary one is something completely random that just screws up the whole look of the piece in any given primary colour. And clearly a second (or even third or fourth etc) colour can be done so the data bloat excuse for not giving us the control, sorry to say, does not stand valid in this case...
