I want to try a DPS class

SMN > BLM due to Deathflare <3

Thank you all for the help. I think I am going to go with the Dragoon.
It has a high HP pool, defense, and damage rating which is similar to the WAR. I also really like the DRG endgame gear.

I do agree. My alternate decision would be BLM. I guess I will determine between the two when the time comes.

BLM is king of high damage and crits <3 but again vs SMN which has better DPS and able to crit 9-10k Deathflare if geared :)

It's not as flashy though as BLM is. The combat animations are lacking.

BTW if you go BLM and get to 50+ people will LOVE you for your AOE's (vault/library/end game) :P

I'm sort of in the same boat. I've been playing a white mage since launch, but want to try a DPS class for a change of pace (also, there seem to be waaay too many healers for some reason).

My main limitation is that I'm playing with high (250-300) latency... so any class that relies on precise timing, tight burst windows and/or double weaving is probably out. I have summoner leveled up fairly high, and it seems to be OK... but how about other classes?

High Latency, you can forget NIN (Mudra lag) and probably BLM (very time sensitive if you want to be effective on your cycles).

SMN is probably the good way to go if you want pure DPS. Best AOE damage, fair single target damage, and good mobility.
DRG or MNK don't mind latency too much either and you can achieve good dps with both.
MCH and BRD ... well ...

I've played on the big pings and the one that responded the best to me was BLM.
Pretty much MNK too, didn't even notice I was on the 300+ until I changed to NIN later on...
