Not really. Wild Star does a lot better at its inventory system. Even WoW handles better. The inventory system must meet the needs of the player, and in FFXIV:ARR we have vanity items, crafting and gathering supplies, various consumables, and some extraneous currency that shouldn't be taking up inventory space at all. Running multiple jobs with a vanity system greatly increases the need for inventory space, along with the high requirements for crafters. I had to abandon my original main simply because running almost every job in the game made the inventory system unmanageable.
I think SE's statement about their fans being important to them is officially duplicitous at this point. They have consistently ignored all forum feedback from release and are just implementing the standard slew of MMORPG F2P money grabbing stuff we see everywhere else.
