What? Standing behing bosses is not a bad thing per se.
Btw I usually don't heal the antisocial dps that loves to stand all alone in a corner. Selene will do it if she has nothing better to do. That shy BLM will get close to you when his HP are less than 30%, trust me.
If you've ever tank'd, I know you've wished there were things your DPSs would do to help ya out. Chances are your tank, as a DPS, wished the same from you. Like wise with the relationship between healers n DPSs. As an example... Me personally, as a healer, have never a seen a PuG party member who has stunned/bound a mob who was gunning straight for me. Something I do all the time as a PLD or BRD when I see a loose mob running towards my healer.
WHICH mechanics can be mess up by the healer standing with melee DPS to heal the WHOLE group ?

During the 2.X progress and end game content where I played as SMN/BLM, I was standing and fighting with all the melee DPS. The MNK/NIN and DRG of my static were always laughing at me, but my healer were loving it but complain about our unfunny BRD that was running far from the group and telling me how I was suppose to DPS from far away as a ranged DPS.
Now on 3.X content, I switch to SCH... and I feel my previous healer problem...
having this BRD running far away from me, my fairy or aoe heal kind of piss me off !
and I get the same from BLM >x<
WHY are ranged DPS forced to run away when massive aoe is coming... How I am suppose to heal them w_w
burning a lustrate and possibly kill the tank ? naaaah

Usually I'm standing in the back because I was standing as close as I could to the boss without pulling. Then precast my opener. Then I'm kinda stuck there til a mechanic forces me to move or there's a boss jump phase. I'll usually try to get closer to the healer when I have time, but there are a lot of mechanics that force you to spread out; when those happen it's better for us ranged to go back so the melee and OT have room to work with each other. Then if we wanna move back up we have to sacrifice dps.
tldr; I'll try and get close, but not if I lose dps over it (unless I'll literally die, but manawall/ward exist)
The more distance I put between you and my ley lines, the less likely you are to walk over and park yourself on it.
With ranged in your party, even though it's not the optimal rotation, precasting Battle Litany as you are walking towards the boss/just before you Elusive Jump to them just to make sure you hit everyone.
As for the topic at hand, whenever I play ranged (read: rarely) I often stand about 1-1.5 damaging-AOEs away from the healer, usually in between the DPS and the healer, off to the side. That way I get hit with good buffs/AOEs and if targeted with an enemy AOE, no one but me has to move.
While we're having this inter-role heart to heart:
Healers, for the love of the 12, stop sprinting around the perimeter of the arena like Linford Christie in Sonic the Hedgehog shoes because you have adds attacking you that do like 2 DPS to you, while you presumably shriek in horror irl. Stand the hell still so we can kill them / grab them like we're supposed to? :P
