Seriously? Who the hell would agree to join someone's party in order to go AFK for an hour or two while the leader crafts?

Like jynx said. You can view the materials needed for each step, make yourself a shopping list, craft it all then ask for help. They will only be there at most 5 minutes while you slap all the pieces together and forge the parts.
Not that it's how it should be it's at least a workable solution.
I set up such a system in Balmung. Me and a few crafter buddies agree to go to smaller FCs to help them build their ships. They contact us via email, we head over and go afk as they craft. We don't charge, we see it as community outreach. They get their ships and I watch Rick and Morty.
My Free Company is small, we've got maybe six active members. Everyone has access to the airship, so usually whoever is on when it completes its voyage will head to the workshop, send it out again, and collect the items for the FC bank. We've been selling the materia brought back and saving everything else. Once we have 7 million saved up in the bank our plan is to divide it equally among the members and keep 1mil in the bank for future project needs. We usually discuss among ourselves a bit which components we'd like to build next, but mostly it doesn't matter to most so long as the airship is getting an upgrade.
Its a little tough to get four of us on at any given moment for constructing the components, but the advantage of a small company is that everyone can participate in building and utilizing the airships.
