I think people are confusing this Omega with an old robot boss Omega from an earlier Final Fantasy game.
I am willing to bet that the "Omega" that is buried in Carteneau is actually Omega Weapon. Which, to be clear, is not related to the robotic boss "Omega" at all. Seeing as Ultima Weapon was also an Allag weapon that was unearthed from Ala Mhigo, it's quite possible that Omega Weapon was a companion project to the Ultima Weapon. I'm guessing that the Omega Weapon was used, alongside the Ultima Weapon, to subdue The Warring Triad. -

I suspect FF14 Omega will look more like the 8 and 10 iterations, given their similarity to Ultima Weapon.
I don't doubt for a second that it'll be activated at some point down the road, the question is who'll do it. -
