I saw this Day Zero. Looks horrible on Au Ra...
This is to minimise clipping. All sheathed weapons are placed at a static point on the character's back or waist, meanwhile different weapons and different body equipment can vary in bulkiness. As a result the static position that weapons are sheathed at has to be far enough away from the body to ensure it doesn't clip with bulkier pieces of equipment.
It's nicer to see weapons floating a little off the body than to see them impaled through the back.
Pretty stupid thing to complain about considering the reason is to prevent clipping into your character. Not all weapons are same size and they magically hang on your back...get over it. There's more prevalent things to fix than this obvious design choice for a valid reason.
I am seeing this EVERYWHERE now. GG for ruining my immersions, OP
Make your weapon invisible then. It's impossible to fix, just deal with it. The worst is when you have a robe with a fat hood and your staff clips right through the bottom of the hood and comes out of the top. It looks really silly.
In FFXI, PLD's shields floated 6 inches away from their left arm at all times and it looked kinda silly.

Limitations!
The problem is in order to fix this they would need to code specifics (with regards to the weapon). For every single piece of armour for every single race, or you would see massive clipping when wearing some armours.
It's magick!
Problem solved.
