You guys will want to have a gander at this thread:

It also has a few comments from the localisation teams' Ferhawles as well, who together with Eemeefu drops tidbits of lore from time to time.
I think one of the things holding speculation back is that these items were activated at a time when our fan-sites weren't running sweeps for new item DATs, and thus, we don't have any pages or pictures to go on staring at unless we want to log in and have a gander. Until now.
Take a look at the close up and let's see what we can figure out.
Prob gonna wind up being some giant laser or something (death star)
Thanks for posting that link to the picture Anonymoose. It kinda looks like a stylized meteor on the right side of the pearl.
My theory is, you know how mobs that agrro have a red star next to their names? maybe the red star on the earring is the threat eorzea is facing and the white sphere is eorzea.
Just thinking what could the spikes be on Dalamud in this pic?

I think you're reading too much into it. If you look at the moonlet close-up then look at the curse of dalamund picture they're practically the same apart from the colours being reversed. One is a white moon with red dalamund (the moonlet) and one is a red moon with blackish dalamund (picture). Given that it's meant to be Dalamund that's red in the first place it'd be fair to say the pictures colours are wrong and the moonlets colours are correct. either way it doesn't really say anything apart from "The goldsmiths made some jewellry that looks like the moon and dalamund". Though if the jewellry was made BEFORE dalamund turned red then... ooo, spooky conspiracy!
With Dalamund being so much smaller than the moon though it'd be easier to say it's more like a large meteor than a second moon.
Catapult is right the Localisation replies give some interesting hints
So for some reason Menphina is painted red on purpose and the "appendages" are also there by design, so ...Quote:

Oh boy, this is getting good.
I'm not going to retract anything I said before, but I thought you could use another nudge, as it seems my first attempt was more of a sharp thrust in the kidney. I had a second talk with the lore-masters about the artwork, and after several bouts of poking, prodding, and pleading, they finally broke and here's what they told me I could tell you: the smaller moon with the mysterious "appendages" is, in fact, Dalamud. The reason it is not red, as it has been noted as being in several quests, is supposedly because it is partially shadowed. So, to answer the 100,000 gil question--there is nothing wrong with the art, with the matter of "hue" being left open to interpretation.
Ah, so the reason the moon is reddish in the picture would be.... the colour from dalamund is reflecting on it, like how our moon is illuminated by the sun? :3
Guess that makes sense.
