Depends. You can build RDM from the ground up the way they seem to be doing to DRK. Another option would be introducing a class and then tack the job on top (Fencer => RDM).

FFXI had a tiny glimpse of a good direction for RDM when they gave it enspells and phalanx (that the former were left to rot forever is for another discussion). It would be possible to make that the focus of the job (I.E a guy hitting things after enchanting their sword) while still maintaining the offensive/healing magic aspects of the job in other ways (elemental spells with varying effects that react to certain abilities, a heal that costs the RDM HP instead of MP); allowing the job to cross-class Cure, Protect and Raise from CNJ and Blizzard II, Thunder and Sleep from THM would help round things out. This way you have sword, offensive magic and healing magic rolled into one, staying true to the job's concept without treading into the ruination afflicted on the job by FFXI.

As far as weapons, GLA and PLD are Sword&Shield. You can build RDM around rapiers or cavalry sabers and maintain a sort of distinction. I'm partial to rapier because curved swords don't do anything for me.

The only thing preventing SE from adding RDM to the game is SE. None of what you mentioned is a real issue.

RDM not having access to spells named Cure or any of the elemental spells can be easily solved by giving them their own special healing and elemental spells (its very likely that Astrologian will get their own Cure spell just like Arcanist has).

Convert only appeared as a RDM ability in FFXI and I'm not sure which existing ability you consider to be Doublecast. GLD/PLD already using swords is also a non-issue since they could simply give RDMs a specific type of sword like "fencing swords" and remove any of those from GLD/PLD (like they did with daggers when ROG/NIN were added). But above all else, what people really want from RDM is a melee DPS that uses spells too, SE would just need to build a job around that concept.

This. They've already shown that they're clearly able to re-work jobs to fit into FFXIV if they have to. In fact, I even suggest that they do that with Red Mage just to stand out from WHM and BLM. A lot of people insist on thinking that a Red Mage wouldn't work because it's a wannabe WHM and BLM with a sword.

The way I see Red Mage getting in is as a Battle Mage. AKA, a mage that focuses on being directly in your face rather then spell slinging from a distance. I even suggested to SE that the Red Mage spells be melee based, like conjuring up flaming pillars as an AoE blast surrounding the Red Mage, with no cast time. Maybe even throw out elemental based sword waves consisting of fire and such. People have been clamoring for a sword based DPS class after all this time. Maybe Red Mage could fill those shoes.

A melee DPS that focuses on intelligence as its primary stat for damage, with perhaps some regular spells to throw out that do have cast times.

And that's just a few ideas. Quite frankly, people need to stop keeping themselves inside the boxes and start thinking outside the box. When it comes to how a job can work in a game, you're quite frankly only limited by your own imagination.

I never played XI, and I couldn't afford another subscription no matter how cheap, but I though it'd be fun to be a Red Mage, and I love how they look (since red is my favorite color) I mean being a mage in the midst of battle seems cool, instead of fighting from the sidelines, but its no big deal. I just thought it'd be a good and fun idea.

I'm good with Rdm not being in this game.

Unless they rearrange entire party setup / armory system / everything and add a true support class, the limited roles are going to limit jobs beyond the triad. Our community lacks the understanding for this game to work like xi did. Sorry rdms....

If you're using XI as a basis, you've got to remember that, at least at one point, BRD was also a support class(not to mention Corsair was treated as one and Blue Mage could be under the right skillset), and XIV converted it into a hybrid DPS/Support. RDM could have 'Heal', a Physick/Cure-type spell, for low-level survivability like ACN does. Bring back some of the old-school XIV 1.0 disused skills, do the hybrid TP/MP/TP or MP/TP/MP combos that people have brought up in other RDM suggestion threads.

People need to remember that aside from XI, the only defined roles were Healer and Non-Healer, there wasn't a true Tank until XI came around(FF-wise, unless X/X-2 had the role).

Why did you have to bring this up? Reminding me of the pain of not being able to play my favorite job since the first FF. :(

And why not? They certainly already did their fair share of tanking in FFXI.

In the end, WILL it play like a RDM?

This is an entirely different game and some (or most) jobs have a different playstyle from their origins.

Take SMN for example, it's a disease specialist (with a egi it can control)
BLM just just spams Fire, using ice to recover mp

I'd rather they focus on new jobs rather than bringing in old jobs that barely resemble their origin
