Probably a melee DPS that has a few ranged abilities. Nothing special.
I'd also rather something more akin to the Hyperion and Lionheart over Lightnings atrocious armory.

If they added a gunblade class in any form, it would be awesome. Such an iconic and important class for the Final Fantasy series. They shouldve made a gunblade class imo instead of the upcoming machinist/engineer/musketeer class.
The gunblade class could work as a mid-range DPS class, that has to go to melee distance every now and then and hit once or twice with the blade to gain a buff for the upcoming gunned ranged attacks. I would love something like that.
Well with the Garlean Empire rising now in the current storyline we just may see Gunblade Job as a future FF14 Job but when I don't know since my best guess is only around either a X.X update or in a Expansion involving the Garlean Empire that may end the Garlean threat to Eorzea.
I'm talking about FF14 version of Gunblade being a Melee/Range type weapon. As for showing how FF14 Gunblade works, ya they didn't give much show of it except for around CT storyline when Cid and Nero were fighting the clones and some moments where Gunblade users were in combat during cutscenes.
Only time Gunblade shined the most was during one of 1.0 cutscenes but only for a small moment...

it would most likely be a melee class and use light-ish armor and have leather jacket with fur as AF... or that power ranger suit... either is fine. would be cool if they somehow added a sort of trigger mechanism like in ff8, that would add some variety to the class... have no clear idea how that would be implemented in this game though... maybe a very short cd on a offgcd skill that adds more damage or crit to the next weaponskill that lasts for like 3s or less? and being focused in damage like dragoon is but with less single damage but a pretty good aoe damage? and some utilities of course... in someway...
but really.. i think this would remove a bit of the the possibilities of adding gunweapons as vanity for the other jobs.. like that gunspear or gunknuckles etc...
Back around the 2.0 launch Yoshi said that if they ever introduce a gunblade job it won't be until we invade Garlemald since the entire concept is uniquely Garlean in the FFXIV universe. Based on what we've seen of Gaius and Nero using their gunblades though I would take a guess that they'd be a DEX based DPS job (assuming the stats even still function like that by the time we get to Garlemald in 4.0 or 5.0). I can see them having some interesting mechanics related to opening and closing distances with their target, with different skills having optimal ranges as opposed to the rear/flank positionals of the other melee jobs. Could be interesting.
I think it is a possibility for the future but like others have said, not until we get to the empire. It seems that pretty much every Garlean outside of the imperial grunts is trained in gunblade usage (Cid is an engineer who apparently moonlights as a gunblader, ditto for Nero, rocking a gun hammer!!). Seems like it's kind of ubiquitous there, so we'll probably get that job about the time we get to the empire.
Like others have said though, I wonder what they will do to distinguish it from other classes; especially with machinist coming, both the sword and the gun elements are covered now. It seems like it would be hard to make this class different enough from the others to keep people interested. Maybe in the future the replacement for classes->jobs will just be something like merging jobs. I could see leveling a sword job and leveling machinist allowing access to a gunblade job as well.
I have to admit that I'm not really feeling the concept of a Class/Job centered entirely around a gunblade. However, I would like to see some gun weaponry implemented for almost every Class.
I've not the slightest idea how a gunaxe would work, but I still want one.

Historically, "gun axes" functioned just like bayonets except instead of a piercing blade, a single bladed Axe head was affixed to the front of the gun near the muzzle. Out of bullets, take your gun and swing it like an Axe.
Same general concept could be used to design FF style gun axes, in which the shaft of the axe is the body and barrel of the gun part. For some reason I see the melding of a pump shotgun with a large two handed battleaxe being the most fitting combination.
