I had three Linkshells that were totally dead before 1.18, and now, two of them are very much alive.
I'm even encountering NEW players. Not returning players, but NEW players. O_O

Mysidia has always had a good population, but it is rising as well. I see people everywhere in all cities now, where people used to only be in Ul'dah.
The player amount isnt increasing, its just that everyone spread out a bit to do dungeons and the company missions at the different regions, maybe even leves in the specific areas for guildskills and now that everyone has finished those and are returning back to the usual game of "stay in Uldah", you guys think its increasing, when its just getting back to how it was. Uldah packed, everywhere else = dead.
While 1.18 has seen increases to the player base, those players are starting to burn out and leave already on Figaro [my opinion is contrary to what my friend has listed on this post].
Perhaps on YOUR server. Everywhere i go is packed. Raptors Grind Camps (3 Parties), outpost for both dungeons, all starting zones, copperbell, mines, black eft camps.
I even saw people missing out on spots for Behest lol.
Gridania isn't as ghost town as it once was.
Market Ward looks more packed.
Hell, people still doing the summer event.
I just came back to the game after staying away for a couple months. Actually it was more like 4 months I think. Patch 1.18 brought me back. I really like the auto attack.
That being said, although the main core of my linkshell was still playing, the rest of the server seems dead. I was told that people are just more spread out but it doesn't look that way to me. All cities are dead. Less players wandering around the zones as well, at least that is how it seems to me. I did go around actually looking for people too.
I've seen an increase on Trabia since 1.18.
Hell, for about a month before it even Ul'dah was becoming a ghost town but now I'm seeing people almost everywhere I go.
There's a couple of new faces. Lol'd harder than I should have when I saw this in Thanalan. http://i56.tinypic.com/14348j6.jpg
I'm one of the people who returned after 1.18. Left around the time the forums were added.
I think the most important thing is player retention though. Every MMO sees a surge in players following a major patch, as people return to check out new stuff. It's the amount that stays for more than a month following that which really matters.
Population is on the rise here on Palamecia ^^
