In FF VIII and XIII Ragnarok was also not a sword
When I think of Ragnarok I think of Midgard and Yggdrasil etc.
Which would be Norse Mythology, ultimately foretelling the end of the world and the death of the gods. >_>;
Each Final Fantasy has a different take on the series' reoccurring elements. Fenir for example is often portrayed as a wolf, but is also a Motorcycle in the FFVII universe.
Ragnarok is commonly a sword, but is an airship in FFVIII and an accessory in FFX-2 and it is a great axe in FFXIV. The way one Final Fantasy handles an item has no baring on how another Final Fantasy will, because they exist in separate universes.
This. Every FF game has a recurring ultimate weapon, but the forms are never quite the same each time. Besides, Paladins already have a sword (Excalibur) and Ragnarok needed to be used for something else unless Square derided to let the Warrior wield swords too.
I don't know if it can actually be called better suited for DRK sword when we don't even know what they plan to name DRK sword if relics even stay relevant for that long considering changes that SE could make from here to there. (I hope they do stay relevant though.)
And you know what the Marauder's former intended names were right? Executioners. So that intent does scream out death for me at least.
But has been pretty consistent when it came in terms of weapons. Whe I look back, I don't think Excalibur was ever made into a wand..a gun..a staff...or dagger for example. So the reoccuring themes do shift sometimes, but they always had a sense of consistency. That's the problem with weapon = class, they pretty much limited themselves, as they already stated they already backed themselves up into a corner with this system. The only thing left is Caldabolg which will probably be for Dark Knight.
Or well, since this is XIV, Caldabolg will probably be a Bow or something in 3.0.
What about Ultima Weapon in FFIX? That wasn't a sword.
