I think the main point here is *GIFT* to someone. Meaning YOU yourself will never actually get the item, let alone try to sell it. You would designate the in-game friend of whom your gifting and it would arrive in their mailbox with a greeting from the sender.
At least that is my take away from what the OP is trying to say.
EDIT: And items would be unique/un-tradeable so the recipient could not turn around and sell.
Maybe I'm too naive... but I really want to think that the community is not so bad... if we go this way, tomorrow we'll see shouts like "give me 20M gils and I pay your months" ? I understand your fears but imo it's not the good way to think always worse...
I'm sure SE can prevent a lot of bad uses of this possible "christam campaign" with a lot of precautions.
Another one I thought yesterday (add to the ones before) could be to "open" this campaign only for 24 hours the 24th of december and all gifts would be sent the 25th.
