I prefer FFXIV's chat log, it just needs some tweaking to make it perfect.
I'd prefer to make as many as 5 or so, ones with purposes like the OP mentioned.

If they are going to copy paste anything from XI it should be the chat box. Was the best chat System I used in a mmo to date, not sure how it would with the action bar though.
FFXIV's chat box is fine, they just need to add the option to create tabs, which is coming btw.
I'm confused, the chat box in xi was tabs, so if they implemented the addition of tabs you could have it exactly like xi, but also the ability to customize each one
Two problems.
- The first is that customization as it stands doesn't always work. Specifically, I keep one frame set to my "General" tab, which has nearly everything going to it (It excludes Party, Linkshell, and a number of battle and synthesis options that are too spammy to leave on at all times). When I accept local levequests, it will show the message "You have received the required materials", but will not show the "You may accept X more local levequests at this time".
However, if I change that frame to the second tab (which contains no social text, but all battle and most synthesis and gathering text, and includes System Messages but not System Error Messages), the "X more levequests" message will appear there and then when I switch back to the first tab, it will properly appear on that tab, as well.
It could well be happening with other messages, as well, but as I'm not expecting them to appear as I am with this particular levequest message, I don't know to look for them to note their absence.
- In XIV, I can't switch tabs using my keyboard as I can in XI. I'm sure this is a non-issue for a great number of people, but I would be very surprised to find that I'm the only one who does rely on keyboard controls as their most efficient means of performing such tasks.
These points may seem minor, and it's easy to respond that "I'm sure it will be fixed", but until they actually have been fixed, they will remain concerns for me.
In the XI interface, you can press "Enter" to enlarge your chat box to full screen, and then use the "+" key on the keyboard's number pad to switch between the general, party, linkshell, and tell tabs. I didn't start playing XI until last January, so I don't know how it compares to what was in place four years ago.
It did. Using "F" to enlarge the chat log then hit "F" again to see only /say, "F" again to see only /tell, "F" again to see only /party and "F" again to see only /linkshell (It's certainly the wrong order but it's the idea ^^).
Yea and that's what lacks in FFXIV, a way to move from tab to tab without the mouse for those who don't play with one. It's not handy to pick the mouse each time yu want to see a tab. So I did two windows with only one tab in each. Chat modes in one and game info in the other one (I think that's what Xatsh did too).
EDIT: Sorry trinta, we answered at the same time (I took quite a long time to write my post though >.>)
so like i say its not the fundemental idea of the ffxiv tabs/windows you dont like but the fact that you cant add extra tabs and you cant do it with controller/keyboard, which I agree is a pain, but the overal concept is much better with full customization. Alot of people asked for multiple windows which is what was given.
