I like what Yoshida has done. I didn't do MMOs or FF before this, and no I do NOT want 1.0 or XI design decisions to ruin what is working great right now.

There is a big difference between WoW style theme park MMO and what Tanaka had. There were fundamental design flaws that made the game nearly unplayable. Would I have preferred something less instanced and hollow, plastic-y feeling? Yes, but I don't miss the things Tanaka implemented that made the game what it was during launch. Not to mention to think that using a single player console engine is acceptable for MMO was just all kinds of fail.
not sure how WoW is claustrophobic, what with pretty much the entire world being open, bar going from continent to continent, no load screens going from zone to zone? You're right. Also, I was introduced to MMOs through Ragnarok Online. I also prefer grouping up over soloing anything, just because I enjoy having friends around more. But you're right. I much prefer instanced solo stuff. Thanks for reminding me.
While I agree XIV borrows inspiration from games like WoW, and more recently with the dungeon UI update in WoW's 6.0 patch, WoW borrows from FFXIV's design as well, comparing the two are really like comparing apples to oranges
I don't know compared to 2.0, WoW felt a lot more open (literally open world) and had a lot of transportation options with teleportation not as emphasized (at least when I played). Although then you talk about FFXI, you could easily spend 30+ minutes traveling. FFXI, WoW, FFXIV in order of travel scale and open world danger.
I sincerely hope that 3.0 brings back world scale, as it has near zero now ;/. I'm not asking for half hour travel times, since I was quite pleased with WoW's options, but at least something more than "aether teleport + 30 seconds mount time, at most".
Just cut the player models size and movement speed in half. Game improved!(?!)
Cheer up! If you:
1. hate yourself
and,
2. hate fun
and want 1.0 back, FFXI is still around to approximate it. Although I've heard disturbing rumors that the dev team for XI is catering to those filthy fun-havers more these days.
You forgot Surplus
And yes, point 4.
I don't know what they thought while they did it. It really punished you if you killed the enemy fast. Because of this, DoTs were called exp killers and players spammed their weakest skills on the enemy to get many hits on it before it die, so they could get good exp from it.
Each hit had a chance to give you some exp and after the enemy died you got the exp you earned during the fight. but only from your hits. You didn't get exp from the hits of the party members.
People who think the UI was the only problem never played 1.0 longer than day 1 or never left the starter city
As a 1.0 Legacy player I strongly disagree with this thread. In my opinion Yoshi-P is doing a fantastic job as well as pushing out content and quality of life updates in a much more timely fashion. Tanaka did a terrible job with 1.0 and left out a lot of key elements that should have simply been there at launch, especially considering how long the alpha and beta went on. I participated in alpha and beta and despite an overwhelming amount of feedback, almost none of it was taken into consideration and fixed. They didn't start to listen to the fanbase until after the game had already been launched and sunk.
I think the numbers paint the picture louder than words, FFXIV 1.0 was one of the most pre-ordered mmorpg games ever made and it tanked hard, yet ARR is thriving with over 2.5 million players at this point across various regions. Sure there were some elements from 1.0 that I miss however ARR is a far superior game in terms of fun as far as I'm concerned. The UI in 1.0 was terrible, the gameplay was slow, and most of all there was nothing to do!
Good riddance of Tanaka, worst producer and game creator ever. FFXI is eleven times better now that he is gone, Matsui did in one year what Tanaka would have done in 3 years. The difference is beyond massive. FF14 is bazilion times better - Yoshi did way better job, not perfect, but far far better than what Tanaka ever did. You want "old school punishing" game, go play Dark Souls series. The majority of people here just want log and play ride the theme park attraction, in and out, instant gratification. I believe the world has changed a tiny bit in the last 14 years, so get with the program :)
