I do recall being puzzled at one point when I had a set of plants have the "It's seen better days" message even though it didn't have the purple effect. Unfortunately I can't recall what it was.

Hence the depending on visual cues part; others confirmed plants can be poor quality but not display purple.
It wasn't clear from the initial post if they were tending them or not, because fertilizing doesn't count as tending.
By keeping a constant schedule, you eliminate any opportunity for this bug (and by going by the status text, not color.)
15-16 hours, 24 hours tend interval. Anyone knows what will happen after 24h maintenance oct 27-28? Mass crop death?
I keep records of when I water/fertilize my plants, and have only been growing top-end stuff like Thav Onions, Glazenuts, Jute, Broombush, specialty choco food etc.. They go purple in 24 hours. Low-tier plants take even longer. Haven't seen a plant go purple in less when I actually kept tabs.
I'm not sure how long it takes for your plants to actually die after going purple, but as long as maint is only 24 hours and you've watered just before and get back in soon after, it should be fine.
Don't wait for your plants to wilt to water them.
If you water (tend) them twice a day (morning and night) irl they should never wilt. Always remember to tend after fertilizing, as fertilizing basically accelerates the plant forward one hour, also bringing the chance for withering closer as well.
It just happened to me with my glazed nuts. I'm ruined! ; ;
