That game was so bad they literally tore it down, apologized for it being so bad, and completely rebuilt it.
Why would anyone want to go back?

I'd probably take a look around, for story purposes.
if it were included in the regular sub then yes I'd create a character on it. (or just transfer my original one back to it).
there are many things I miss about 1.0 such as more moves having an elemental effect.
however, i do enjoy that archers/bards dont need to constantly buy arrows now :P
Ironically, Yoshi did in fact plan to keep 1.0's servers up and active as long as there was sufficient interest from players. Accordingly he actually brought the game back online two weeks after the initial shutdown for a little over a month at the end of 2012, but because no one really cared (I logged in regularly and there was like hardly more than one or two people on my server at any time), SE decided to shut it down for good on December 31st 2012.
So yeah, players had their chance to keep the original game active and they squandered it.
Although there are some things I miss from 1.0, ARR is just better in every way, and thus 1.0 thoroughly deserved it's bullet behind the ear.
I would play it. It wouldn't be bad if they added content to it. I think a lot of the problem was just that it launched without enough content to a reception of poor reviews and didn't get a marketing push either, so it had no momentum. A lot of people who gave it a chance still enjoyed it and some still look back on it fondly and favorably. I didn't really notice this copy/paste landscape that people talk about. The real world isn't full of interesting hotspots... I like a vast landscape even if many areas had no particular purpose... it felt more like a real place. And with things spread out, meeting people on the road is less common and thus feels more important; the people you do see are more valued, you want to greet them... it's a different vibe. When you are packed into a small zone full of characters, each of those characters is less important, just a mass of people.
Would create a character on that server but would not transfer servers
While there are some aspects of 1.0 that I would like to see in ARR (Aegis Shield mechanic, proper endgame loot system, actual elemental system) there really isn't enough good stuff for me to actually want to go back and play it again.
I've never played the first version, so I'd happily take the chance to experience what I've heard so many (bad) things about. I'd really like to see for myself just how bad it was, or how good the good aspects were.
If it were a limited time thing with no real time or money spent on supporting it? Or if they first got serious about QA & polish with the current servers & clients? Sure, I'd give it a whirl.
If they brought it out in parallel and committed to supporting the additional client(s) without first getting much better with their current systems? I would likely give up hope on their sanity & go elsewhere.
