In FFIV, Bahamut was the Father of Eidolon.
I'm actually very interested about this Primal stories but I'm willing to wait for SE to release the Quests and Lore :P I'm also very interested about the Ascian but they appeared only once and is still very Mysterious.
FFXIV has a really great lore imo, you can go talk to some NPCs in LL and they'll say something interesting.
What I can derive is that The Dragon in the Movie originated from maybe either Sharlayan or Ishgard, but probably Sharlayan since ther land is called Dravania. My guess is that the Garlean Empire wanted to eliminate their biggest threat, which is the Dragonkin by Assaulting their Land and What seems to be Bahamut protected his land and brought the war between the Dragons and Garlean upon Mor Dhona. This may also be a reason on why the Sharlayan is not very open to the others. Upon his Death, Bahamut spread his power and the Being called Primals came to existence.
So these Primals consists of many personalities but each of them Carry a Fraction of His Power.
I bet the Garlean also has something to do with the Primals spreaded in that Incident.
I'm also guessing that the Dragon there is a very Great Being.
If I looked and guessed about the Ascian, I'd think they existed long time ago, an Ancient Race and could be one of the biggest threat besides Garlean. Maybe they're connected to the Incident years ago and somehow to Bahamut and the other primals.

It's been aluded to that the Gigas exist in FFXIV as well, as they're semi-mentioned in a quest. They probably live way up north - and I'm betting their primal is Shiva.
Then obviously we have the Kobolds with Titan, Ixali with Garuda, Amal'jaa with Ifrit, the Sylph with Ramuh, and the Sahagin with Leviathan.
And actually, there is more lore on the Ascians in the Limsan-lominsan storyline - I'd recommend watching the cutscenes on youtube or ranking up a Limsan character to do them yourself.
They're also known as Shadoweaters - what exactly this means isn't explained, but they apparently (I say apparently because I'm not positive if the person is a Shadoweater, or if they are a minion) also have the ability to assume the form of anything - even the mortal races. The kicker is they literally lack a shadow. Almost as if they aren't really there - a ghost of sorts.
However, it seems that the Ascians are currently hunting for - and have obtain as least a part of the key that unlocks the treasures within Seal Rock, which supposedly bears the ability to control the Leviathan.
Why they want control over Leviathan is not known yet, but obviously it's going to be very, very bad.
Now, as far as Bahamut is concerned - it would make incredible sense for the Garleans to want to take him down. He appears to be sort of the head of all primals - assuming that blast releasing all the primals was his doing. The Garleans believe all of the Eikons must be destroyed, and that they're a plague upon the lands that will destroy all life. It's one of their driving forces.
However, since 1.18 drops you learn some very interesting things. Once you complete the Limsan-lominsan "Into the Dark" quest (the darkhold quest for the Maelstrom), you learn that the Imperials are busy harvesting elemental crystals for what is called Ceruleum. It's basically the juice inside crystals, and bears no elemental-alignment. All of those un-aspected crystals are actually just elemenetal crystals that have been drained by the Garleans for their Ceruleum.
Now, the Garleans mainly use Ceruleum as the power source for their Magitek technology - and they obtain it by other means as well. (For example, those tall structures in northern Thanalan emitting the green smoke - the area is named "The Ceruleum Fields", and is most likely a Garlean mining operation to harvest Ceruleum from the region.
However, there is also another use for Ceruleum, a far more dangerous one. It is directly stated in the quest that the Garleans are in fact planning on summoning their own Primal, which is why they invaded the Darkhold. There was a ton of crystals within the caves, and they planned on draining all the Ceruleum they could from it. That Ceruleum has the ability to rouse a primal.
...Why the Garleans, the people who despise all eikons, are choosing to summon one is beyond me. However, I think it's quite obvious who they would summon.

Generally, Bahamut is treated as better than the other summons. In 4 as said above it was the 'father', in 9 it was the 'final eidolon', in 11 it was a top-tier boss at level 75 (and the devs considered it too powerful to be treated as a regular summon for players) etc.
That said, there's no proof that IS bahamut, and considering Ishgard is said to be at war with the dragons, and he's the king of them, I'd say he's still alive and kicking up north somewhere.
I also don't think we're seeing a story reboot here, I'm really hoping the city storylines continue on (we've already seen cutscenes pre-launch involving titan that aren't in the game) and flesh out the individual country problems, whilst the main story deals with the Garleans. The company stories I imagine would weave around it and deal with the Archons in more detail. (It's my personal theory that the storyline NPCs are all archons, considering they share facial tattoos with the confirmed archon).
As for the Ascian, I think it was probably dropped in briefly as a prelude to future events. There's a lot of mention of the underworld by NPCs so I could see that reemerging as a plot device in the future. Perhaps the fact that there's frequent mention of something below the ground consuming energy from crystals, the fact that there's been mention of the undead monsters climbing up through the ground, and the release of the Eikons are all linked. That's without even considering Meteor and where it's coming from/who's summoning it.
They really have a lot of loose threads right now, I'm looking forward to seeing where they go!
Edit: The post above was great! Really informative. Alexander + The Garleans = Win, I've loved that thing since FF9. Perhaps they're gathering Ceruleum to summon meteor, perhaps? The fact Cid refers to it as 'Meteor' as if it's a name rather than 'The meteor' or something suggests to me it's a specific thing, rather than just any meteor. -

In the lore somewhere on the lodestone they said that Rhalgr the destroyer comes down to Eorzea in the form of a Roegadyn, I hope this is expanded in the main storyline sometime, almost like a shadowlord type deal ^^.
I would like them to totally prove our gods are false and we've only gotten sp bonus because "we believed we'd get sp bonus", and then we have to convert to the primals ^^ I'd be worshipping garuda, (this is my dream / a joke)
For some reason I think the Ascian can traverse times, and maybe at one point used to be something lighter looking. If you were a comic book fan, Rogue form the xmen has an alternative version of her from the future called Amalgam (clever) where she steals powers from mutants about to die on battlefields, or the Marvel Universe in general has watchers. What if the Ascian is just a watcher of sorts for Eorzea or Hydaelyn, -

To be honest, I could see us fighting the supposed true gods eventually. They're the ones who brought about the sixth umbral era supposedly, and killed off the majority of the population. It could be that they've sent the archons to carry this out again, and so we've got to stop them, possibly with the help of the Eikons.

The guy in the opening cinematic used the Echo to see the war with Garlemond, which happened about 30 years ago. The beastmen have been worshipping the Eikon for generations, so they couldn't have just jumped into existence right then. I believe they were held captive on the ship, and that's why the dragon (I don't think it's Bahamut anyway, as all the class quests go on and on about how many dragons there are in Ishgard) focused on specifically bringing down that ship.
