Chocobo Dye Experimentation

Well fed mine 4x doman plumes(talking 3 time message new feathers and one time plumage) I'm expecting either sylph green or lime green from this(infact lime green is more likely since blue should remain the same). If I can get that then I can go try for the other greens I want(moss, apple and cactuar).

Oh I meant keep using the same fruit within the same 6hr feeding until they get the growing new feathers message. That's how I did my first 6hr feeding but I switched to a different fruit with the 2nd 6hr feeding.

ended up being millioncorn colored after 6h

Since some results are not consistent between players, something might intervene during the process.
Please, take as much intel' as you can while doing your tests. Simple RNG might be involved, but it might also be things like weather or even Eorzan time.
These variables may have nothing to do with the result, but we need to confirm it.

The reason only one was needed is because you had one feather message to go up... and one to go down... the number of fruits needed to get the message is kinda irrelevant to the color change... only the feathers message.

For some reason, after feeding my chocobo 28 Doman plums yesterday in hopes of getting Celeste Green (I got Sky Blue instead), no amount of O'ghomoro berries or Mamook pears will give me the 'Beginning to grow new feathers' message.
I fed about 20 O'ghomoro berries and 20 Mamook pears, and nothing happened. I guess I'll just try to start over from Desert Yellow once we have more information about how this works.

Edit: I fed my chocobo one Xelphatol apple and got the '...grow new feathers!' message. I guess blue and green values were just completely maxed out.

This person's first quote is irrelevant, but his/her second post is interesting. He/She went from Coral Pink to Rose Pink after one growing new feathers message. Coral Pink to Rose Pink is one shade lighter on the dye scale, and she used Doman Plums to achieve this (lighten Red). He/She also made mention that they stopped feeding after exactly one message, which is good -- it might mean that indeed color won't change until the message is received.

So it would seem once you are on a specific "color scale" feeding it a lighten or a darken would shift you up one shade or down one shade. Of course there needs to be way more data, but it makes for a decent hypothesis.

This result is extremely exciting. I'm afraid I do not have the time nor the liquid assets to make a serious contribution to the actual experimentation, but I will throw out ideas where I can. Though I am afraid I am in large part responsible for the current obsession with the RGB scale (I know how much you hate this idea). I was one of the primary originators of the RGB/CMY color scale theory. That being said, I am far from married to that idea, and it clearly is flawed or at least incomplete.

Your observation that Lighten and Deepen steps negate each other is mathematically extremely powerful. If the theory

holds true, that implies a direct relation between a Color and the number of steps in each direction.

I strongly believe that there is no random nature within the colouring itself. The random factor appears based on the number of messages displayed. If each fruit has a 30% chance of causing a change, there will be a noticeable variance in the result (based on the number and type of fruit). I believe, however, that the actual change caused by a single "Step" is constant and predictable.

Also, I believe it is important to note that based on what other users have reported, it must be possible to perform multiple steps in a single direction per feeding. It would be impossible to have seen the variety of browns that we have seen from O'Ghomoro Berry feeding without it being possible. Many of the different values of brown were reported as single feedings before the 12 hour mark after the first batch of fruit appeared on the market (meaning it must have been a single feeding).

Experiment: O'Ghomoro Berries

I am using 2 Chocobo's for this experiment, both housed in a GOOD stable.
Intend to determine if # of snacks matter, or number of 'growing feathers' messages.
Will also attempt to see how many color changes are possible using ONLY O'Ghomoro Berries.
Will edit this post continuously as tests progress.

First test results indicate that the number of fruits is deciding factor, regardless of how many feeding sessions or 'growing feathers' messages are received. Preparing second test to confirm/shatter these findings.

I only used O'Ghomoro Berries so there shouldn't be any wacky deviations.

Between my 2 tests thus far and ZReports data, it has now been scientifically shown that the number of grown feathers messages is not a completely accurate way to track (at least not in a single feeding) the migration of your chocobos color. ZReport counted 7 new feathers messages in his single feeding to travel from Desert Yellow to Shale Brown, while I counted only 4 such messages across 9 separate feedings.
During my third test, I went from Shale Brown to Lavender purple with only 2 messages of 'Growing new feathers' and 5 berries total over 5 feedings, versus 10+ berries on a single feed. Also on this note many people report that any feedings after the first 'new feathers' message will also give the 'new feathers' message, indicating the message only means that your 'bo will be a different color that the current when the timer runs out, not that you've passed into a new color with each message.

Third Test Intending on collecting data on both birds until Othard Blue, ASSUMING both will actually land on it.
Bird #2 has been advanced to rank 10 at this time.

Ok, Bird #2 (in test#3) just went from Lavender Purple to Raptor Blue with 6 O'Ghomoro Berries and only 1 New Feathers messages. Completely unprecedented!!! But that's why we're doing this.
Update, Bird #1 also changed to raptor Blue after being given 6 O'Ghomoro Berries, 1 per feeding. Perhaps Gloom Purple is the "HQ" or rare proc from feeding berries to Lavender Purple, and raptor Blue is the norm?

Fourth Test Bird #1 is rank 13 now, Bird #2 has quit the game to play Destiny (/sadface)
Also it seems SE has slightly changed the messages given when feeding snacks
