This explains a great deal about the state of things in Eorzea. Now I want to see newbie THM or ACN NPCs that are just learning to read accidentally casting spells from a cookbook, maybe summoning a Carbuncle with a tomato for a head or something.
In Version 1.0, it was a running joke that the guild receptionist, Yayake, would threaten you with needing to memorize the contents of a very large stack of books before deciding that perhaps, for now, you might learn more in the field... this time. So, either literacy rates among adventurers are, as Ferne suggests, much higher, or she knew most people couldn't read and was just a terrible, terrible person.
Funnily enough, the racial lore for Midlander hyur have long stated even back before 1.0 was launched that they are "trained in letters from a very early age", meaning that most Midlanders at least are literate, if not highly educated. There was a thread a while ago that debated just how educated Eorzeans were which had some surprising ideas.
I guess though that we now know exactly why the books you can buy as furnishings for your house/private chambers have blank pages. ;)
