Plus now that the dev is saying they might add sorting to the lists people will be focusing even more on the numbers.
I would even suggest taking more pages from fps by having match achievements like : killed 5 players without dying ect. Things like this get you pumped up for the next match.

The dev. team will look into displaying the number of assists and other information that players achieve during Frontline in future updates. As soon as we have more details, I will be sure to let you know!
I don't think anyone really wants kill streak rewards, but assists would basically work in the way you described, like they do in most FPS. You need to contribute a decent amount of damage for it to be an "assist", at least in FPS. In games like DOTA I think simply applying a stun would count, which is frankly a pretty big deal in DOTA.
I never really put much stock into 'kills'. As a SMN I am doting everyone up, and there are times I am festering someone to death... but a lot of the time I am just ensuring that pressure is on everyone with Bane. There are also times I come upon two people fighting and help out my teammate by killing the opponent... and they worked so hard but they need a little help, so I help them finish off the person. It's really not fair that I would steal their kill just because I came and killed the person at the last moment. So, assists would be nice but really easy to get, as others have said. I would like if there was some sort of activity gauge to determine how effective people have been as a whole, BUT that would discount the people who spend the game guarding bases, who aren't going to see as much action as aggressors or people storming mid. At the same time, though, it would easily weed out the people who join and do absolutely nothing outside of follow the group.
If you need so much contribution to consider assist in kill, then how a Pld like me who main task is stun to get kill point? I don't think I will deal half damage of the DPS.
Regular FPS system doesn't work here though, in that game everybody is particular a DPS.
